So I've been keeping my eye on solid state hard drives and the sizes are increase. I hear that will be the future of hardrives and replacing the regular hard disk. Now, I'm going to be building a really fast comp in a few months and i'm wondering if i should go solid disk? the person wants solid state but will the performance be noticeably better? The person's current system is really good quad core with a 2 raptor striping raid going on. i know they don't need a new comp but they want one. so i guess i'm saying is it worth going to solid state yet? thanks

SSD (with OS/apps on flash drive) has been around since 1996, Beverage and delivery companies have had stripped down versions of Windows running for over 12 years now, in very rugged and harsh situations ( a HDD would never have held up to this)

depends on what you call performance

Power draw ? Heat savings ? Durability ? etc

In my opinion, it's just not worth it yet. The speed/durability might be there, but the cost per GB is way too high. The performance increase isn't really there either. With a good system, loading times aren't much of an issue, and there are other factors that will keep it from its full potential.

Yeah the price is the real killer. For a 32GB drive, which I would consider the bare minimum to be useful for most enthusiast computers nowadays it will cost you $400-500 at least. Just not worth it in my opinion.

Get a VR (VelociRaptor) for now...move to SSDs when they get price/performance figured out.

Right now the high end ones are good for performance; the low end ones not.
Price/performance value won't be there for a while with SSDs.
