Just picked up the supertalent ultradrive ME (the vertexes were sold out, but essentially the same drive), and I have to say, its one of the best upgrades ever.

Everything pops open so fast, the first boot I had on it was so many times quicker than it was almost absurd. Definitely worth it.

In a laptop environment it may be "worth it" to move to an SSD drive.
In the desktop environment it's not "worth it" at this point in SSD evolution.
Ask again in a year and the picture may be different.

I agree completely but only if you remove the words "it may be" and replace it with "is".

Yes... "may" be worth it.
It all depends on the individual's preference, needs and finances.

I replaced the Titan 256 GB with the new Samsung 256 GB SSD and the Samsung is faster and it runs cooler than the Titan.

Well yes, Vista and Windows 7 align properly on 2^n (which is far better than Windows XP's 63), and there has been no statistically demonstrated difference in 2^n vs "correct" alignment on the Vertex for FW 1275 (if anyone needs benchmarks, I have them). It is possible that the drive is internally mapping filesystem blocks into blocks on the physical media via the LBA indirection table (search for the article about intel SSDs from Intel), and so exact alignment really doesn't matter as far as the physical media is concerned. If you have a benchmark that proves otherwise, please post.

Dam those numbers are juicy.

They do start out pretty juicy, but they sure don't stay that way for long:

Crystal Diskmark

When the drive was freshly flashed from 1199-->1275, I was able to pretty much match the speeds posted by jimhsu, though.

To its credit, there was no perceivable change in "snappiness." The drive was, and still is a fine boot device. I do not feel it was worth the $/GB (compared to the VR in a desktop setting), but it was certainly worth the $85 (AR) to satisfy my curiosity.

I got a Vertex 60GB just before I went on vacation from a friend. Got home this weekend and flashed it to the new FW. Loving it so far. Now, I've only installed Vista and WoW on it, but the improvements are noticable right away. I would say it was worth it, for me at least. I only paid $100 for it though.

I'm considering a Vertex 120g for my m6300, which has a Scorpio Black with the hope of extending battery life. I'm not seeing any thorough power comparisons anywhere.

Are they just glossing over the power issue because the power use isn't that much (or any) lower?

it depends on the drive, i have seen thorough reviews of power differences. SSDs can be lower, or can be higher, and regular drives also vary a lot. desktop spindle drives are 5-10 watt, laptop spindle drives are 2.5-5 watts. look for a wattage test of the specific SSD you are looking for and compare it to those figures.
