There's not a huge variety in monsters, but how many games these days do? Half-Life 2, FEAR, and Far Cry all had less in that category at least.

FEAR did, it had less, i didnt like FEAR, Far cry... yea suppose it did but it made up for it with imo interesting monsters and very fun levels to play on. Half life 2 had a ton of monsters, ant lions, headcrabs, zombies, fast zombies, poison headcrabs, poison zombies, fast headcrabs, combine overwatch, civil protection, nova prospekt guards, combine super soldiers, striders, hover strider type things, helicopters, man hacks, ant lion queens, plenty of variety in hl2.

The difference between the four types of combine is pretty neglectable, so if you count those then you have to factor in normal, bandit, military, mercenary, scientist, zombie, and exoskeleton wearing stalkers. Rats, blind dogs, pseudodogs, controllers, psuedogiants, poltergeists, fleshes, wild boars, snorks, and military helicopters help STALKER's baddie count quite a bit in addition.

Not to say Half-Life 2 was devoid of range in monsters, but it was definitely a disappointment compared to the original which has had not only more to fight but more unique fights. The entire first person shooter genre has been downhill in that respect, admittedly.

don't forget those bloodsuckers. IMO one of the best monsters I've encountered in games so far that and the controller. Man those bloodsuckers are so cool when they go predator mode in your face and just run up and smack you or avoid you w/ their invisibility.
