STALKER is slow...

After addressing a really annoying Vista related crash, I played STALKER for about an hour. It seems really slow paced. I got bored and started playing Battlefield 2.

Is the whole game slow, or should I expect some Half Life\Doom style action at some point?

Have you reached the bandit camp yet? After an hour I would imagine that you have so if that fight is too slow paced for you most other fights probably will be as well. It's definitely not like Half-Life or Doom.

Certain parts of this game get real fast, intense and furious. Other parts are more exploratory and quest type game play. Is it as exciting like HL2 ? no , but it has a lot more going on than D3 story wise. The game gets fun when you start getting the good weapons and start sniping from a half mile away with silenced tracer rounds among others. I'll tell you this it gets very creepy at times more so than D3...

If you still have a hard time getting into it maybe try the Trader Mod and or this Trainer Mod for rubles, health and zero weight limitations. It is still a fun game with these helpers. Even more so...

what's the actual systemspecs for STALKER? If I wanted to play at 1024*786 for example ? I'm not a graphics freak as in I have to have everything on high, maxed out aa/fsaa. Medium ish or so will do.

You shouldn't expect any Half-life/Doom sequences until near the end of the game where there are swarms upon swarms of bad guys. Most of the shooting is 'tactical' more than standard FPS. If you can't stand it, then maybe it's just not your thing, but try to see how it goes. Also, the game is more RPG/adventure than action.

Personally I love the gunfights in this game. Much less mind-numbing than most shooters. It reminds me a little of FEAR but with no slow-mo cheat and outdoors.

Is it my sound card or the game that the gun shot sound of this game sounds like well, firecracker?
I have played Stalker on both of my rigs and both produced the same sound signature.
Sorry OP to hijack your thread since I'm too lazy to post a new one.

I bought it yesterday for $40. I'll sell it for $30 shipped if anyone wants it.

Good luck with that since the game is already $30 at some stores. I paid $30 at Best Buy several weeks ago.

I paid the same. Worth every penny IMO.

I got like 2 hours of unenjoyment out of it. Like paying a cheap hooker to kick you in the no no zone.

Did you really go in expecting quake 4? Didn't you read up on it at all before you bought it?

It's been out for quite some time, and by now it's pretty well established that running and gunning == certain death in STALKER. It's a tactical shooter, not a pure action game. There are some intense moments in the game, but it's never run run run gun, unless you count run gun quickload cause I'm dead.

2 hours? Probably didn't get 5% into the game. Stick it out.

If you go into STALKER expecting Doom 3/HL2, then yes, you're not going to like the game. Personally I hated STALKER the first time I played it... I played it for a few hours and then not for a few months. Recently I returned to it and now I see how great of a game it is. Amazing graphics, interesting story, and it's a very challenging game. The problem with STALKER, and why many people don't like it, is they go in expecting a FPS and also, the game doesn't really help you learn the ropes. STALKER has a fairly steep learning curve compared to other games, and the game pretty much thrusts you into the world without giving you any pointers. If you get past that, however, the game is really amazing.

2 hours not nearly enough. Especially since you'll be using shit weapons and armor/artifacts during that time. It's a little bit of a struggle at first, but once you get better gear it becomes a lot different.

Personally I liked that, start out like a real noob.

STALKER is a pretty demanding game, with dynamic lighting on, that is. I do pretty good with an 8800GTS 640MB @ 1680x1050, but I still have some slow downs. You can't run anti-aliasing in STALKER; the game uses deferred lighting. There is an AA setting in game, but it's not "real" AA, it's just some kind of blurring effect (probably like GRAW).

Maxed out, 1024x768, I'm going to say that a 7900GS/X1950 Pro would be good. Static lighting, you'd have no problem with a 7600GT, but static lighting kills the amazing graphics.

How far into the game did you get anyway? I found that it really picked up once I got into The Garbage and participated in a fight between some Stalkers and some bandits. Lots of cool cover, and it was cool seeing how good the AI was.

One thing i cant stand about STALKER is the lack of variety in monsters, that and half the anomalies look the same.
