The cheaper desks at Staples are all made with particle board, but they're still good desks. I got a nice, big, L-shaped desk with a keyboard tray for about $35 or $40 last year. When I moved out, I just left the desk outside and someone took it within two hours.

Exactly...these sorts of desks are great for temporary uses. Nothing you'd keep in a house for using extensively. More like a stop gap.

I bought the computer cart to use for a kid's bedroom computer awhile back. Can't think of harder wear than daily access by a ten year old and a three year old. It has held up extremely well after 6 months so far. Very sturdy.

i am going off to school again in a month, and it will be my first unfurnished apartment.

the reason I ask is because I might be given something nicer, but I might not, and I would like to have something on the back burner in case I dont get it.

Every desk from Staples, or any other office store, will be particle board. There will be higher quality or better laminate desks, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a solid wood desk from there. Then again, if someone can find one, please show me.

I have one like that. Its a different color though. Got it at Staples about 2 years ago for about $30, and its held up pretty well.
