I saw it yesterday and I enjoyed. Was worth the $18.
I saw it Friday night at the drive-in; along with Life of Pets. I was amazed at how many people were there just to see Pets - about 1/3 of the cars (presumably there with children - $2/kid admission) left after that movie.

Was worth the $3.50. ($7 for 2 movies.)
I thought it was pretty enjoyable, though the character development, and picture cameo of Leonard Nimoy as Spock, led me to almost believe that these were all the grandchildren of the original crew, coincidentally all named after the original crew members. That is, their personalities were different enough that it just felt like different people whose personalities were sort of like that of their grandparents.

It was a debate - Ghostbusters or Star Trek. But the reviews of Life of Pets were a hell of a lot better than reviews of the latest version of Ice Age. During the previews, there was a preview for Ice Age and my wife commented that it looks exactly the same as all the other previous versions. I'll probably check to see which night Ghostbusters is playing first, and see it that night & leave.

The deficiencies in the plot were too massive to make this a repeat-see movie. I regret paying the price of admission. It will sell enough tickets to make a profit, because my generation will always pay for something that reminds us of the past, and will spur on yet another mediocre sequel. This will not be long-lasting like the older Star Treks were. Within 2 years Star Trek Beyond will be all but forgotten. Nothing about these latest movies is inspiring a new generation of Trekkies, it's just leeching money away from the older generations.

Was alright... Liked the first 2 better. I doubt I will buy this one though like I did the other 2.

Agreed. It was ok, but nothing spectacular. I never once felt like anyone was in any real danger. I mean, the bad guy doesn't seem menacing. I never felt like anyone was going to die at any point either really.....

I'd say that's true of all three of the recent Star Trek movies, which is why I've been somewhat disappointed by them.

But viewed in that context, I'd say they're decent, in this order 1 > 3 > 2.

I thought this was the best of the 3...what plot deficiencies are you talking about?

Drive in? Where do you live? LOL.

There's one about an hour from me. Went for the first time a couple weeks back. Saw Finding Dory and Independence Day.

It was a fun time. Would have been even better if Independence Day was worth a shit.

Don't bother. I'm probably the biggest Ghostbuster fan on these forums and a think I got one smile and one chuckle out of the whole movie. Star Trek had more laughs.

Just saw Star Trek Beyond in Imax 3D today - the very first time I have seen an Imax 3D movie. I was underwhelmed by the technology - 3D really sucks, just like it did 30 years ago. Oh well, they got my $10.74 I paid to see the movie.

Anyway - about the movie. Kirk grew up! FINALLY. I actually liked this movie. Yes, the story was basically completely horrible but I really enjoyed it. The pacing was FAR, FAR better and yes it had lots and lots of senseless action, but it FELT like a Star Trek movie to a degree - something the fist two just didn't.

Does this redeem JJ from fucking up the franchise? No, it does not. It's still fucked up. But less so.

Star Trek Beyond was not shot in IMAX so it isn't a great example of IMAX technology, but judging by the ticket price you paid, you may not have even seen it in a proper IMAX theatre. It sounds you may have watched it in a LieMAX theatre.

I watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens (which was partially shot in IMAX) in a proper 3D IMAX theatre (dual super-bright 4K laser DLP projectors, downtown Toronto), and then several days later saw it in a 3D LieMAX theatre (small shopping mall theatre, suburb of Montreal). The former was great (and I don't even like 3D). The latter was absolute crap.

I watched Star Trek Beyond in that same proper 3D IMAX theatre. I refuse to go to a 3D LieMAX theatre for anything, since IMO it's just a waste of money. The quality of LieMAX is noticeably worse - dimmer and blurrier - than a standard 2D theatre in many cases.

---

BTW, if you look up LieMAX, you'll find lots of articles talking about proper 70 mm film-based IMAX vs. LieMAX Digital, which uses dual 2K projectors.

While 70 mm film-based IMAX is great, IMO it's not necessary. What's also good is the one I mentioned, which is their top-of-the-line dual 4K laser DLP projectors. Excellent quality. The difference in image clarity and brightness is literally night vs. day. How literally? Watching a daylight image on LIEMAX 2x2K is so noticeably dimmer in some theatres that it almost looks like twilight compared to proper IMAX 2x4K laser.

IMAX with laser: Superb contrast, 4K resolution, and huge color gamuts

I finally got a chance to see this movie yesterday. Overall I really liked it, as I liked how it gave more character to the reboot roles and fleshed them out. Much much more watchable than into darkness and less hectic than the first one. Plus I didn't see as many plotholes in this one that some people did. For example:

Just saw it. Entertaining but not a master piece. Typical reboot heavy on the action but plot holes

Such as:
How the hell did he become the alien or was he always the alien even in his early days?
Why were their other aliens
Why did he forget about his federation ship
Why did he need the super virus when he clearly had a huge technological advantage?

1. He became the alien as he used the alien technology to steal the lifeforce from other creatures, kinda like how in Harry Potter killing people made the main villain change in appearance.
2. The other aliens (like the ones fighting for him) came from wrecked ships on the planet. We see that there are roaming gangs on the planet as Scotty is saved from one by the white Avatar chick. Therefore it makes sense the main villain could have enlisted some of these thugs into a personal army over a hundred year time period since he was the only real "military" power on the planet. The only two soldiers who got real screen time (the guy who was his number 1 and the chick who lied to get them there in the first place) were obviously the two crew left he mentioned in his personal log. We saw there faces at the end as the files were closed.
3. He didn't, it just didn't matter to him anymore. He found better technology via the mining machines and he found a better link to the federation via probes. The white Avatar chick was protecting the ship from roving gangs and not the main villain.
4. His technological advantage was more a mirage, the mining ships did tear apart the Enterprise but were later beaten by the freaking Beastie Boys once the heroes figured out the weakness. Without the virus there was no guaranteed threat to the starbase from an attack, heck even before the Beastie Boys the mining ships couldn't even penetrate the Starbase. It makes it seem like the attack on the Enterprise was a freak victory due to having the advantage of surprise.

One big plot hole but not as bad as stuffing your fellow eugenics super soldiers into torpedoes like Into Darkness did.

Bad guy had a starship that the hero's could get flight/warp worthy in a matter of hours. Instead Badguy spends 100 something years on nebula planet going cyber vampire on people who crash land all while forgetting he had the ship in the first place.

It was mentioned that the bad guy's ship was the first "warp 4 vessel." They then speculated the only way it got that far was via a wormhole. So even if the bad guy fixed the ship the journey a hundred years ago (in movie time) would have taken too long to get home at those speeds. Within that 100 years the Federation built a starbase nearby that he could reach but presumably by the time that happens he is already in full "F the Federation" mode.

Looks like Fast and the Furious :/
The bold and the curious.

Looks ok. It can't be any worse than the last two and they were decent for sci-fi action flicks.
RedLetterMedia put it that way: If you look at them as "Star Trek" movies, they're.....kind of not. But as regular sci-fi action movies, they do a decent job.

Edit: Sorry, responding to old posts. I'll blame the new layout until I get the hang of where the post dates are now located.
