About the only good part of JJ trek is Karl Urbans Bones McCoy.

Yeah, Bones and Chekov are the ones that i remember first when thinking of the reboot star trek.

I wish they would come up with a script writer who can actually make a movie that is more in line with startrek : the motion picture.
That was a great movie.

TMP is definitely up there with the best Star Treks. I'm not a huge WoK fanboy, and actually rather like The Final Frontier, as it's basically a giant metaphor for Shatner -- not Kirk -- facing obsolescence. So I probably rate TMP as the best, though not necessarily the most entertaining, and The Voyage Home as the second best because it's goofiness is so charming. Then comes WoK/Frontier.

TMP is too cerebral for a blockbuster these days. You'd never have a studio commit 200 million or whatever to make something as slow paced and deliberate as TMP.

TMP was a horrible movie. The best part was the story. But they were reintroducing the characters after more than a decade and it was very slow and awkward.

What symbolized it for me were the long, long scenes of Spock riding in the spacesuit, that seemed to go on for 40 minutes.

It was the characters, the pacing, just terribly done.

Very disappointing. Good story.

I always felt TMP was sort of a misguided attempt to make something 2001-ish. I suppose they succeeded somewhat in that the final product was a movie with long stretches of nothing interesting happening except for special effects. I've tried to watch the movie a couple of times over the past few years and just can't make it through. The effort required just isn't worth the payoff. The story really isn't that bad, but the movie itself is.

See this is my beef with the Star Wars prequels. The story was brilliant, featuring a mostly good electorate of citizens that get swept up in the compelling speechcraft of a corrupt politician to the point of becoming complicit in the destruction of their own democracy over promises of security and stability. (With Anakin being the analogy for the Republic's corruption and downfall) The story of corruption from within has so much more depth and meaning than episode 7 but it's executed so poorly, while 7's weak story gets excellent execution.

2) If he's suddenly gay now, he was closeted all this time - parallel universe justifications aside. Being closeted - rejecting who you are - is kind of the antithesis of what the pride movement is all about.

I for one have been a Star Trek fan from the very beginning. I have to say that I’m tired of the Abramsverse and tired of how they are changing the past of the future. I didn’t like the fact that Abrams destroyed Vulcan, now relegating Vulcan’s to a minor species (same for the Romulans), therefore not really a part of Star Trek other than a couple of characters. I didn’t like the fact that they Humanized the character Spock to the point of having too Human-like feelings and nothing about his internal emotional struggles. His relationship with Ohura was basically for on screen laughs. In the second Abrams movie, I didn’t like the “leap” in technology which pushed this original series reboot to technologies far in advance of The Next Generation. Now changing the basis of a main character, with George Takei’s objection, which does not honor the creator of this franchise, is the final straw. I for one will no longer pay my hard earned money to watch these motion pictures.

I'm projecting a bit but George's point was sulu wasn't written to be gay, references to his child are answered as she was a beautiful woman from ...(I forgot where).
He is great with the idea of gays in Star Trek he just feels Sulu should stay ambiguous.

The whole Sulu being gay being a homage to Takei is disrespectful instead. If he is against the idea it's not honoring him in any way.

I don't mind the alternate reality but I do agree on the destruction of Vulcan, Romulan & vast leaps in technology being issues. I can honestly admit to not liking TOS, loving TNG, being a bit meh with DS9 and finding Voyager okay. Enterprise was worth watching for Scott Bakula but little else.

Whatever magic ingredient determines our sexuality was different for Sulu in our timeline. I like this idea because it suggests that in a hypothetical multiverse, across an infinite matrix of alternate realities, we are all LGBT somewhere.
