StarCraft MMO:

Why? Vivendi sees only $$$

Text
Recently, Vivendi gave a presentation to Wall Street. A lot of things were mentioned, but this announcement was a standout: "All Blizzard franchises will become MMOGs." And when they said all, they meant ALL! Along with the bold announcement, they also claim that they now have a model to come up with MMOGs in 3 years, and that they are also backed up by a $50 Million budget.

More people would buy RTS. A lot of people probably would hold off, considering how much time they have invested in WoW. On top of that, Starcraft costs pretty much nothing to maintain, compared to the WoW gateways.

I don't care what they make, personally Id love Diablo 3, Starcraft 2/Starcraft MMORPG either one. Starcraft 2 RTS would make tons of money though. First off they have a huge Starcraft fanbase, almost every has played the game. In Korea it is like a national sport, they air matches on TV and make Starcraft chips and running shoes. I can't wait to see what it is, I hate Blizzard as an evil empire company but their games have me by the balls

Just read that and thought wtf? Seems they do exist, who would've thought it? Has anyone tried these before, are they tasty? What are they shaped like, little drones?

I am 100% sure this announcement is starcraft 2. There is no doubt in my mind. If it isnt and im wrong i will be crushed

in my opinion it would make more sense for them to make a starcraft rts (as long as its as good as the original) to re-familiarize the younger crowd with the game. Its been how long since starcraft? there are a lot of people who are playing WoW and Warcraft 3 who never played starcraft. Putting out a good rts will embolden the popularity for the mmo which is a much larger financial risk.

I want Starcraft 2. Anything else (other than maybe Diablo III) is pretty irrelevant in my mind.

I'm guessing it will be Starcraft 2, but don't really care if they make it like Warcraft 3. Blizzard has been going downhill since Diablo II.

How would they tie in the "Kerrigan rules the galaxy" bit? Also, despite my love for SC, I will still never pay by the month for a game.

Blizzard quickly denied the rumors by saying "that rumor is not true in regard to Blizzard...We (Blizzard) believe that the rumor circulating about this subject is based on a misinterpretation of information provided to industry analysts." They also denied that they are developing any MMOGs as of the moment by saying loud and clear that they " do not currently have any MMO development plans beyond the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, and furthermore, we don't have any intentions to focus on only one genre or platform with our future games."

Vivendi never said that Blizzard would have to make said MMO. Vivendi owns other game development studios besides Blizzard that are capable of developing it. Since Vivendi owns Blizzard, they own the franchise, and thus could have another studio developing a starcraft MMORTS or MMORPG. Blizzard only stated that they were not working on it.

I state only speculation and the possibility of what Vivendi could do should they decide to take a greater role. I personally hope for a RTS game, but I personally believe that the next game of the starcraft franchise will be an MMORTS and not an MMORPG (as to capture a totally different market base and not cannibalize WoW).

If they weren't developing it and only shared similarities through name, would they make such a large announcement of it? Admittedly things have changed since 1996, but they never gave Diablo: Hellfire a single mention AFAIK. Besides, it seems odd for Vivendi not to give a Starcraft MMO to the company that started the franchise and outsold every other game of the same genre by millions. Guess it's just a few days until we see.

I've also been wondering if it might be an MMORTS. I think any type of Blizzard MMO with ongoing fees would easily make a multiple of the profit of stand-alone box sales. As a business, it would be extremely difficult to go in a direction (straight RTS) that they knew would only make a fraction of the profits.

I don't really buy the argument that another MMORPG would cannibalize WoW income. The MMO market continues to expand and there are probably millions of former WoW players looking for a new MMO. NCSoft has talked about exploiting this player turnover, by offering a range of MMO games, so when the inevitable burnout comes for one game, they can offer the player different options and still collect subscription fees. SOE is doing the same thing with their Station Pass.

So, I think the market can easily support two successful Blizzard MMOs, even two MMORPGs.

The reason I'm thinking MMORTS, is because Blizzard is probably tired of WoW themselves. Obviously, they were developing it for years before it was released, so they've been living and breathing WoW for a lot longer than the players. An MMORTS would give them a fresh set of design challenges. I also think an RTS rather than RPG MMO makes it easier to sell the diehard Starcraft fans on the whole subscription idea. This would also give them a chance to break new ground for MMOs in the science fiction genre, which hasn't really seen a huge success before.

Only a few more days left...

StarCraft isn't as geared towards being an RPG as WarCraft, so I think you'll be wrong. If it is a MMOG, I'd wager it would be a FPS (wouldn't be much of a stretch considering all the work the put into SC: Ghost) or even some form of RTS.
