I personally hope for a RTS game, but I personally believe that the next game of the starcraft franchise will be an MMORTS and not an MMORPG (as to capture a totally different market base and not cannibalize WoW).
I've also been wondering if it might be an MMORTS. I think any type of Blizzard MMO with ongoing fees would easily make a multiple of the profit of stand-alone box sales. As a business, it would be extremely difficult to go in a direction (straight RTS) that they knew would only make a fraction of the profits.
I don't really buy the argument that another MMORPG would cannibalize WoW income. The MMO market continues to expand and there are probably millions of former WoW players looking for a new MMO. NCSoft has talked about exploiting this player turnover, by offering a range of MMO games, so when the inevitable burnout comes for one game, they can offer the player different options and still collect subscription fees. SOE is doing the same thing with their Station Pass.
So, I think the market can easily support two successful Blizzard MMOs, even two MMORPGs.
The reason I'm thinking MMORTS, is because Blizzard is probably tired of WoW themselves. Obviously, they were developing it for years before it was released, so they've been living and breathing WoW for a lot longer than the players. An MMORTS would give them a fresh set of design challenges. I also think an RTS rather than RPG MMO makes it easier to sell the diehard Starcraft fans on the whole subscription idea. This would also give them a chance to break new ground for MMOs in the science fiction genre, which hasn't really seen a huge success before.
