I think solution is best suited for people away from urban areas where the 80/20 rule dictates who gets the high-bandwidth technology vs. nothing or little at all.

Got an email the other day that it's now available in my area. Guess the beta is over and it's officially being offered now. Awesome knowing that it's something I could get if I built an off grid cabin.

Dude...1999, I was on dial-up. Fast-forward 20+ years later and you're getting freaking high-speed Internet FROM A SATELLITE IN SPACE! That is INSANE!!!

This is the perfect tech for a guy I know, Comcast wants around $10k to run a wire to his kind of remote place. No decent wireless service there either.
Around $100 per month and 50-100 down is fabulous.
Even if it is $50 per month extra it would take somewhere around 16 years for him to break even paying to run the cable.

Why of course.....
I will say they may have a point about Star link services 650k homes by 2028 or whatever date. Funny how they won’t step up and say “we will get fiber to those homes by 2028”

It is amusing they are complaining that their new competitor will bring a lousy service. Why wouldn't they let them bleed money and fail? Why should they save Starlink investments? These are the same cronies that give support to Trumpism.

They want a cut of that 900 million

They have a point in the same sense as some carriers complained about the business plans of some new wireless entities in the late 90s/00s. Some simply had business plans that would never work. Their whole unwritten purpose was to take spectrum & government funds, run a barely functional business with them, then sell the spectrum for billions when they fail.
This doesn’t appear to be the same scenario, space x has solid backing and have launched god damn rockets into space. We are not talking about a few investors and a guy who has run numerous failed businesses here.

Actually, Starlink is proving they can do what every telco and cableco hasn't been able to do which is provide decent service to rural America. I'm not advocating Starlink or any such company doing that kind of business by satellite but I am even less advocating of the existing big telecommunications companies sitting on their butts and doing nothing but paying their lawyers to mess with other peoples businesses. AT&T, for example, has done an atrocious job at providing decent broadband to rural America. heck, they fight just delivering <1Mbps to people in some urban areas less than ten miles from me and my county has >900L people in it. And to add to this AT&T bought a satellite company and tried to gt rid of it and cound't. Why? Because no one wanted it. But then again AT&T claims to not be a telecommunications company. It is a media company a la Warner Media.

It is funny that the telco's want out of the broadband business but they continue to actively fight someone else going into it.

Seriously considering it. Our local cable company's service is sketchy sometimes. I know part of our little town has had no cable/internet for a couple of days now. Price, other than the equipment package would be about the same as we currently pay, ($125 for 100/10)
We're Dish Network customers, so other than the occasional really bad storm, the internet service SHOULD be decent.

Sounds like an awesome solution for a friend of mine.
He can get xfinity broadband provided he pays $16 per linear foot for 1,600 FEET to wire his place that is off a road and has a long dirt path to get to.
You’d never be able to build there today no frontage.

Setup took all of 15 minutes, it's just on my lawn now but getting speeds of around 80mb down and 15 up, latency is around 55ms
I think it's still searching for the best angle for the satellites

Since they just applied for mobile use, I wonder how well it will perform in that arrangement since most of the time the antenna will not be optimal.

The phased array makes this a non-issue, it's already been successfully tested by the airforce in-flight, and musk has said it should be capable of working on high-speed rail too.
So I don't think it'll be a problem.

From a 2019 test
In December, the Air Force tested Starlink, and the exercise was a success, with SpaceX Starlink satellites used to link to a Lockheed Martin (LMT) AC-130 gunship aircraft.
and another 2019 test
So far, SpaceX has demonstrated data throughput of 610 megabits per second in flight to the cockpit of a U.S. military C-12 twin-engine turboprop aircraft.

How open of an area do you need for the antenna? I'm surrounded by trees, though i used to have a Direct TV dish 20+ tears ago.

I have a forest about 30 yards from the dish but thankfully on the south side, there's an app for starlink that helps determine obstructions, just make sure there's no branches etc in the apps field of view
