Roof mount okay?

I don't know for certain, but I certainly would think so.

Makes me nervous seeing that many penetrations in a roof. I guess if you stay on top of it and double check the tar and reseal as needed it's not too bad.

Me personally I would probably setup a dedicated short tower for it along the house.

It looks like Starlink is finally going to be available in my area this year.

The satellite dish costs $500, though. Maybe Papa Joe can offer us a Federal rebate check for that as part of his broadband Infrastructure bill?

I kind of like that you have to pay for the equipment, since most ISPs now days do "no setup fee", which just means that you're paying for it forever via your monthly fee or even having a separate rental fee. With the way SpaceX does it it looks like you actually own the equipment and don't have to pay for it per month but only one time. Cheaper in the long run.

Wow that's really cool. They do seem to have good coverage even up north in the James Bay area which is nice. The internet is very limited in those communities. We have a satellite feed for a community way up north and for a while we were having lot of issues with it, had to remote into the satellite MUX and issue commands to reset it, it was basically hit enter and pray. Super old equipment, probably older than I am.

Damn I thought they had fixed that. That kind of sucks. Wait until all the other companies like Amazon want to get in on this it's going to pretty much white out the whole sky in long exposures.

I wonder how much protection they have from solar flares. Not that we need to see a graveyard of Starlink toasted items in the orbital landfill.

A true high power CME? Nothing, we don't even have that really on the surface. Normie flares? Probably well enough to survive it.

Well, I doubt I'm going to get a hand laser pointer to stay columnated at 550KM even if they are overhead so I guess a laser from Amazon?

This is what a payload of 60 starlink satellites looks like, they are about the size of a table, the plan a year ago was 42,000 of them, i believe they burn up in re-entry

They also only last 5 years due to orbital decay/fuel onboard so they're basically disposable. That's one aspect I really don't like, it seems so wasteful when you account for the fuel needed to launch them as well as fact that things like solar panels and batteries use rare minerals that will be near impossible to re-harvest after. I guess it might be a wash, since the infrastructure itself does not require much energy at all. No telco trucks going to COs, no diesel generators during power outages, etc.

We probably waste a lot more materials just throwing away computers, those sats aren't very big, and are pretty simplistic in nature.

LOL, poor man latency. My ping is usually 3ms on a not so great day, 2 on a great day. My download is 5.5x faster and my upload is >150x faster and costs $50/mon. It is called the benefiting of not living in the boonies.

I'm just saying, trying to have the best of both worlds is a difficult thing. Choose your priorities. Personally, maybe five more companies will enter the race and completely illuminate the night sky with light pollution from reflecting satellites. Personally with this endeavor we should kill those telco subsidies for rural broadband and treat Oneweb and Starlink like a a traditional network provider and have planned redundancy on two separate networks--which actually is a requirement with wireless.
