My husband spent many years working for Target and I physically cannot get him to go inside either a WalMart or a Sam's Club. Costco is the best I can do.
You start at Aldi and get whatever you can there. Then you move on to Walmart and Stop & Shop for anything you can't get at Aldi. If you have Sam's Club you go there before BJs or Costco. Costco is only good if you have food allergies or affluenza (well except for their food court). Same with Trader Joes or Whole Foods.
I see the stuff people buy at Costco, I buy cheap meat... always. And not a lot. I wandered into my local indie supermarket a couple weeks ago. Rainy weather, I needed a walk and instead of heading for the hills, on a whim I just went in the market. No intention to buy anything, just had a look around. My conclusion was that a lot of people around here "must be made out of money." I'd never buy 95+% of the stuff they have in there. I pretty much stay away from processed food of any kind. For instance, I do NOT buy a can of beans, etc. I buy dry beans, etc., likely organic (when available), so that's an additional expense, but I have some comfort in thinking I'm dodging pesticides. A high percentage of my nourishment is organic. My meats, usually not, though, but I don't eat much meat at all. Probably not enough to keep a cat alive, I like to say, maybe even a rat!I have some suspicion that there are a lot of grocery store changes people can make but choose not to. Maybe its part of my background growing up but I don't understand the attachment I've seen for fancy cuts of meat and brand names at the expense of your weekly/monthly budget. Don't get me wrong I know people struggle making ends meet with even basic food stuffs (and I was one of them for a time) but that trend of posting a picture of your grocery cart or bill sure has changed into carefully staged images and cut video to portray a desired narrative as opposed to giving people the information necessary to evaluate the situation. Mostly because they went fancy cut of red meat, precut and prepackaged non-seasonal fruit and veggies, expensive brand names etc and got called out for it.
I use them a lot for gas since they're cheaper than the ice houses around me. Also in the summer I practically live off their food court loss leaders like $1.50 hot dogs and $2 slices of pizza when it's too hot to cook in my house. If it's 107 last thing I want to do in turn on my oven when my ACs are having trouble even bringing the indoor temp to 80. Getting a meal for less than $4 at Costco vs spending over $11 at Whataburger adds up pretty quickly.

I'm trying to do significant aerobic exercise up to 6 days/week, for sure most days, even in winter.The irony is, we had 2-3 bowls of this a morning and were thin as rails. But then, we were outside riding bikes and playing in the 118 freeway construction zone all day.

They opened a Costco a few years ago. I was not impressed. They have a few items my wife and I like that you can't get anywhere else, especially for her gluten free requirements, but their prices are offensive.

I just got a hybrid myself last October so I'm not sure the cashback will be enough to cover membership anymore. Will see...Yeah the gas thing for any warehouse isn't really important for us since we have EVs but I can see how it's a major factor for others.

I saw Biden last spring at a thank-you gathering for volunteer workers for gun control. Small venue, maybe 500 people or so. Biden gave his full speech, energetic and at the end said "I'm sorry they are telling me a T-storm is moving in and I have to get to the airport." Even still he hung around for a half hour answering audience questions in depth and off the cuff. You probably are? Much of what I get at Costco I can't get at Walmart, I go to Walmart for very few things (one of Costco's weak points is choice). But as far as comparable items, I buy the two pack of Motor City Pizza at Costco, which is $12. One of those pizzas is $8 at Walmart. Multivitamins are priced about equally, with Walmart coming at twenty cents more than Costco. 16oz of fresh mozzarella at Walmart is $8, I get two 16oz packs at Costco for $9.My neighbor swears by costco but I've noticed when you compare most stuff.. it's like $10 more on average than Walmart.
And Walmart isn't always the cheapest either. Stop & Shop has some nice bargains if you use the coupons. Keyfood/ Food Universe too if you browse circulars.
I honestly can't understand why people would pay the yearly shopping fee with Costco when it isn't that cheap anymore!
