I'm sick of everyone stealing content.

It is STEALING to copy and paste an entire news article into your post.

YOU DON'T OWN THE COPYRIGHT!

As a moderated forum, I hope anandtech will no longer put up with this.

The practice to which you object is not plagiarism so your thread is mistitled.

Plagairism is the practice of claiming someone else's work to be your own original without crediting the author. Completely different item than copy/paste and linking to the source as ironwing stated.

I believe that in a political forum where people knowingly come to discuss "POLITICS AND NEWS" that this would apply:

(In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. Section 107, this material is distributed without profit to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving the included information for research and educational purposes.)

Anandtech doesn't distribute the information. Anandtech provides us with a forum for discussion of "POLITICS AND NEWS" that we all knowingly and willingly participate in.

we aren't claiming it as our own. hell if nothing else we're taking something from the public domain and making sure more people read it. with all of our linking we're even helping many sites get at least 100s of more hits than they usually do.

If you don't want to read news don't come to a forum that's named "POLITICS AND NEWS".

This complaint has been addressed. It's been settled. Private members of a forum that exists to discuss "POLITICS AND NEWS" aren't violating any copyright when they post articles to back up their point of view.

The only problem with this forum is those members who continually make allegations, ascertions, and conclusions WITHOUT any information whatosever to back them up.

We went through this 2 years ago.

You're supposed to 'key' your source and acknowledge it.

<Washington Post>

Blah, blah, blah, etc.

Explain to me then, which laws allow you to steal an entire article from my website and post it on a forum without my permission.

You may want to check this out:

http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/chapter6/6-b.html

Read the first section.

Read it carefully.

Tell me STANDFORD is wrong.

from the Anandtech Forums agreement you agreed to when you signed up:

You agree that you will not post any copyrighted material without the express permission of the copyright holder, unless such copyright is owned by you.
All I'm asking is that people do what they agreed to and if not that the moderators enforce it.

It's true that for fair use to apply the poster should omit at least one word from the article being copied

". Comment and Criticism

If you are commenting upon or critiquing a copyrighted work--for instance, writing a book review -- fair use principles allow you to reproduce some of the work to achieve your purposes. Some examples of commentary and criticism include:

quoting a few lines from a Bob Dylan song in a music review
summarizing and quoting from a medical article on prostate cancer in a news report
copying a few paragraphs from a news article for use by a teacher or student in a lesson, or
copying a portion of a Sports Illustrated magazine article for use in a related court case.
The underlying rationale of this rule is that the public benefits from your review, which is enhanced by including some of the copyrighted material. Additional examples of commentary or criticism are provided in the examples of fair use cases in Section C."

I really don't see the harm in it as long as the article didn't come from a private members only pay site. If it was already posted for general public consumption anyway what does it matter as long as the "copy and paster" doesn't claim it as their own work? When you think about it, it really isn't much different from if they just posted a link to the site where the article is because the end result is that the content ends up on everybody's computer who reads it one way or the other. . . It's just a matter of who's web server served the content.

Stealing is bad.

So is posting in the wrong forum. This belongs in forum issues.

Here's a question for ya. Let's say in an article you have written, you state something that is incorrect and you refuse to correct it even after being notified. Now, do I have to get your permission (which will probably be refused) to quote your article before I can begin to refute it?

Your answer is on this website: http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/chapter9/9-a.html#1

And no, you can't copy and paste an entire article then write one or two sentences in response to it as often happens here. That is not fair use. That is stealing.

Thanks for flaming me in true ATPN fashion by claiming I said something I never said and falsely interpreting my position
