So being that I am a steam noob I have a question regarding the client itself. I've been hesitant to install it because I don't know if it's a resource hog or not. Can people share their experiences with how it runs on their machines?

I'm currently running a core i5 rig I just built with 4 gigs of ripjaw ram, EVGA GTX260. The CPU is OC'ed to 3.7 ghz.

Also, does steam have any apps that load into memory upon startup? Thats something i'd like to avoid if possible. thanks for your help!

I avoided Steam for years due to the posted horror stories but this last year I been using it and I have to admit its not as bad as I feared. You can set it up to not run at start up if you want. Which is what I do. I have never seen or experienced a problem with Steam running in the background. I'm slowly accepting digital game downloading. LOL

It's not a resource hog. It's roughly equivilent to a light-weight web browser in terms of resources. The games themselves will use up a bunch of memory when launched, just like normal games.

By default, it'll automatically start when you sign into Windows. However, you can disable the auto start by going to the Settings menu.

You have a better system than I do and no problems with Steam. Just don't have it run at start-up.

Steam uses around 28mb of ram. It does default to loading on bootup however that can be disabled.

28mb is next to nothing resource wise, and it is very nice to have it run automatically since it does take around 15-30 seconds to load if you run it manually.

I have it running all the time. Don't even notice it. I used to hate Steam because I had a few bad experiences with it back when HL2 was released and I was on dial up, but now I like it.
