Still need more FTP input!!!!

I need a static IP right? I don't think I can be behind my router either right? My router shares the internet connection and give each computer their seperate intranet IP.

For All you FTP GURUs. Can you list what i need to start my FTP site ( this FTP server is going to be an all seperate pc)

1. FTP server software
2. big hard drive
3. Static IP??
4. Domain name???
5.?
6.?

static internal ip address is not necessary, but it makes things a lot easier. You dont need a static external ip address. Look at d2g.com, dyndns.org, and zoneedit.com (I use dyndns.org so the other urls may be wrong) for information on dynamic dns resolution. You can forward port 20 and 21 to the ftp server from your router, so thats not an issue.

1. I would use pureftp or bsd ftp
2. only big enough to handle whatever you created that you are sharing (no warez right?)
3. static ip isnt necessary
4. a domain name isnt necessary
5. time -to setup a good ftp server you will need time to study. security is a bitch, take your time to learn it
6. bandwidth -you will need quite a bit of bandwidth if you expect a lot of traffic. If you are serving warez you will need quite a bit more bandwidth, and maybe a lawyer.
7. fast hard drive -IDE drives will be fine if you dont have much traffic and small pipe.
8. secure platform -dont run this on DOS (like win9x), you will get hacked very quickly and it wont be pretty. Plus users would get angry about the constant reboots

i'm using TYPSoft FTP server, it was real easy to setup. the passwords are encrypted (not sure how good though).

You dont need a static IP. It works fine with a dynamic IP as long as you run the software. DNS2GO is a good one. ServeU is a good ftp program. Basically you run the dns software on the computer along with the ftp software, you register for whatever.dns2go.com at the site, and you're good to go. When you want to get to the ftp, just type whatever.dns2go.com and it will go to your server. There is more info on this in Networking.

all i did was this:
1. install it
2. create users accounts with passwords
3. specify which folder (and subfolders) each user can access
4. start handing out warez (jk )

Modify permissions to limit them severely, patch the system, double check permissions, disable any services you arent using, install a firewall, check to make sure the firewall is working the way you expect it to, ...

Unless you are using encryption this isnt even worthwhile in my opinion.

There is more to securing a machine than just trusting the default install. I dont even leave my OpenBSD machines at their default install.

anonymous can download that is all
Chooco can upload and download, no deleting
my secret account can only download but from a different folder
my 2 friends' accounts can upload, download and delete but from their own directories (i'm hosting their websites)

I have my laptop with the FTP client. How do I find my FTP server if the IP changed?anonyouns Since this is just for me friends and family do I really want it anonyous? I should make login and passwords correct?

just register with dyndns.org

you download software which tells dyndns your ip every time your computer turns on. on day 1 your ip may be 111.111.111.111 and the name grice.dyndns.org and on day 2 the ip could be 222.222.222.222 but the name will still be grice.dyndns.org

don't use www in the title of subdomained sites though, www is actually a subdomain and including it could give you a "cannot be displayed" error

another thing, your IP won't change every day, mine changes about once every 6 months and i'm on DSL. my buddy on cable hasn't had an ip change in over 8 months (when he signed up)

Dont take your laptop on vacation with you

Especially if you are in someplace like Mexico. Go out. Enjoy the sun. Enjoy the view. And maybe some scenery or something

mexico is run by the military, they stop tour buses and just take whatever they want from people......they won't hesitate to take your laptop. you won't argue either since they are pointing m4's in your face.

I have never had any problems while in Mexico (Cabo). The place I stay has internet. I just have to hook into the network.
The police part is right though. Herradura Tequila can make you crazy. I think we are kicked out of Cabo Wabo for life.. My roomate came home with a broken hand and a busted up face...... We didn't dare to go to a Mexican hostpital.... Don't start drinking at 10am!!!!
