My girlfriend had her debit card stolen tonight at a club. $200 has already been spent on it.

The bank has a lost/stolen card number, but the line isn't open at this hour.

Is she ok if she goes in to the bank tomorrow morning or is there somebody she can call now? Its a MasterCard if it matters. The bank is a local bank.

Check the banks website but most, if not all, banks require you to inform them in a reasonable time if a card is stolen. Going in tomorrow should be fine, since she is not able to do it now. She should have nothing to worry about if she is concerned about being liable for the charges, if she alerts the bank as soon as she is able.

Had one stolen and called at night, was transferred to MasterCard where they put a hold on it til I could call the bank in the morning. Just look on the banks website for lost or stolen card number.

Call the police. I had a friend who had her card stolen over a weekend and in 2 hours had -$2000. Tons of headaches with the bank for a few weeks to follow. She filed a police report immediately and it was pretty much her saving grace. This was a few years ago before online protection/id theft etc. protection was really big.

Mastercard should have a fraud department that can lock up that account for you.

Mastercard was useless. They said they can't do anything for our bank.

Once again. C-A-L-L...T-H-E...C-O-P-S

It's definitely a good idea to get a police report started, even if they're not gonna go out and roust every mastercard holder in town...

Then, tomorrow, call the bank and start the process with them. She'll be without a working card for a week or two, but it needs to be done.

Last time I talked with her, the cops had been called and she was waiting for them to arrive.

Well at least the card is covered and you won't have to pay the charges other then a small fee.

Surprised they don't have a 24 hour 800 number to call. Both banks that I have debit cards do.

tell her not to use debit cards EVAR!

this is why they are bad. $ is taken from acct directly. it's a pain to get $ back.

credit card = who cares, worry less. It's their $

oh, and PICS of gf b4 giving out real advice?

Call the cops. If you don't the likelihood that these scumbags will just get away with it is higher.

So, heres what happened for anybody who cares.

The cops came out last night, asked her what happened, and file a report. Pretty standard, nothing too exciting.

She went to the bank this morning. They had a form asking what actions she took after realizing her card was stolen. One of them was "filed a police report" so she checked it off. They deactivated her card, issued a new one (will arrive in a week), and will get her money back in a max of 10 business days.

Everything was pretty simple.

Just FYI, credit cards tend to have better security than debit cards and as was mentioned earlier if they get stolen it's not your money that's gotten taken. My wife's debit card got stolen and they siphoned off $700 from our account. We got it back in a few days but at that point we were poor college students and $700 pretty much wiped out all our emergency money we had. Rent came due before we got the money back and if they had taken much more we wouldn't have been able to pay. If it was a credit card we wouldn't have had to worry about that at all.

We still don't have a clue how they got her debit card information. Since then the only time we use debit cards is at Costco because they don't accept most credit cards.

I totally agree with you guys about credit cards.

I use my credit card for most of my purchases. I've even had my CC # stolen online (some retailer got hacked). The credit card company took care of the whole thing. It was fantastic.

My girlfriend however, does not want a credit card. There's no reasoning with her. I've tried numerous times.
