I don't know why they are doing it for free, but you can do the same yourself if you have a domain and a good host.

Exactly - I have been doing this for years with my own domain. I don't think I would trust a third party for something like this. They stop the service and all your accounts from anywhere you used them are gone. A domain and hosting is pretty cheap these days, especially if all you want it for is e-mail.

Ya, I've done the same thing... But, when I actually start getting spam from a company, I don't really know what to do... For example, Hertz rental cars started spamming me with porn, but what good is it to forward it back to webmaster@hertz.com??? the email I gave them is already out there and there is nothing they will do about it... :disgust:

Hertz rental cars spamming you with porn? I think you have some facts mixed up. A corporation such as Hertz would be commiting suicide if they spammed people with porn.

Hertz isn't spamming you with porn. The spammer simply made it appear like it was being sent from a Hertz e-mail address. And that's another problem with spamming. People get a spam e-mail from username@company.com and automatically assume it's that company sending them spam.

one of the good things about having your own domain is being able to create your own throwaway addresses. i created things like junk@mydomain.com, shop@mydomain.com, etc. and if they start getting hit with spam, i'll delete them. i don't use my personal email account for any shopping. and i hardly ever see any spam.

NO. It didn't appear to come from hertz. I own many domain names, one of them is, let's say "technique.com". I created an e-mail address called "hertzcars@technique.com" and I used it as my email when I registered at hertz.com.

I started getting porn spam from companies like "sexxx.com" or whatever and the e-mail was addressed to "hertzcars@technique.com".

But, you say they would be comitting suicide if they did that? How can I prove anything? Who should I notify? I have a list of many companies (huge companies) that have done this. There are at least 2 that come to mind.

That makes more sense.

If you own a lot of domains, just be glad that a spammer hasn't forged your e-mail address. You'll end up with a lot of angry e-mails from people thinking you spammed them.

I don't get the opportunity too often, but sometimes the spam comes complete with a 1 800 number.
Since they went to the trouble to send me the email, I feel obligated to call their number for more information.
And, when I leave a message, I usually try to brighten up the day of the person listening to the message with a song.
A long song. Sometimes several long songs for an extra bright day
And it doesn't cost me a cent
I conclude the songs with the message: "Thank you for your email request for music. If you feel you received these songs in error, please send another email to the same address with the subject Remove me from your music service"

Ya, I'm sure that happens all the time, guess I'm lucky it hasn't happened to me yet. But still, the headers would show I didn't send it out, and besides, spammers NEVER use their own domains, so hopefully most people realize that and go after the COMPANY/PRODUCT in the spam, not just the "FROM:" field...

I use this freeware. It's called mailwasher. It allows you to check your email on the server and bounce any spam back to the sender before it is downloaded, so they think it's an invalid email address. Works pretty well, it's slow though. But what the heck, it's free.

I tried mailwasher and it kept reminding me that it was NOT free and then it crapped out. I now use spamkiller. I keeps the junk mail out of my hotmail account, but does not do a good job of bouncing it back from what I can tell.

How would I go about doing this? Is there a guide somewhere? I don't really care about a website, I just want a centralized email (since I move alot) that I don't have to worry about that I can check with pop3 (unlike yahoo )

Speaking of this sort of thing, does anyone know of any free e-mail hosts that permit forwarding of e-mail from specific addresses?

Spamnet sounds like just what we need. How long before we see outlook express support? Or should I switch to the bloated and resource heavy outlook xp?

I just run outlook... It's worth it alone for spamnet... Spamnet is totally transparent and gets about 80% of my spam... pretty amazing, plus I feel good everytime I get a spam mail that it doesn't block and I hit the "block" button which contributes to blocking that spam for other people...

similar to others I just use a domain

$15 a year to register it

then a different email at each site.

ie CNN@mydomain.com

newegg@mydomain.com etc

If I start getting spam I can simply bounce emails to that address AND i know what fools sold my address. So far I caught OfficeDepot, and JandRmusic selling my email address.

Ya, I do the same. BUT, once you catch them, what can you do really? I wish there was some federal agency we could forward the emails to as proof and they would fine these companies...
