I've had this MSI K7D Master-L with 2 MP2000+ Athlons for about 2 years now, and it ran great most of the time. Recently, I began experiencing intermittent freezes in Windows XP Pro, and hard-drive clicking. I replaced the hard-drive, but the noises continued and so did the freezes. Strangely enough, when I booted into Linux, I did not experience any of these problems (I have a Linux partition and a Windows partition). So I figured there was something wrong with the files on Windows, and reinstalled/repaired. No luck; now it wouldn't even boot at all. I reformatted and reinstalled, but still the crashes and clicks continued. I tested the hard-drive in another computer and it worked flawlessly. So I figured it was the controller: I obtained a PCI IDE controller, plugged the hard-drive into it with a new cable, attempt to install, and still get clicking. Having eliminated the hard-drive, controller, and cable, I don't know what is left. Could the actual motherboard circuitry have gone bad in some way that would affect Windows XP so badly and Linux not at all? Or maybe this is a PSU issue (Antec True430)? I tried removing non-essential components but still had clicking. The 5V rail seems to be undervoltage, about 4.5V on average, maybe this is a clue?
