Strange internet problems

Whenever I go to google maps in scroll in/out too quickly, my internet connection completely freezes for about 2 minutes. I cannot use any browser during that time. However, I can open up a command window and successfully ping google.

Today I tried going to verizon's wireless coverage map. My internet connection completely stopped before the map even loaded. I've tried this with multiple browsers and it still happens.

What could possibly be wrong? Is this a java thing or something? Everything's updated as far as I know.

What kind of Router do you have? I am having the same issues with my systems (multiple systems). I suspect the router.

A belkin router... not sure which model.

First step to isolate the problem is to take the router out of the loop and connect your ethernet cable directly to your modem. See if it still happens.

Do you use cable or dsl? What speed? Post your system specs.

My guess is that he only has his "router" and doesn't have anything between him and the internet other than his router. (Which is also what is translating the DSL or Cable connection.)

Is your connection wireless or wired?

If you can ping Google successfully while it's "frozen" it makes me suspect the software vs the hardware. You should try pinging a site that you aren't trying to get to and see what happens. Being as those "interactive maps" are Java based I would lean more towards it being some sort of Java problem. I don't know if Microsoft's Local.live.com service uses Java or not, but you might want to try that as well and see what happens.

You could always try uninstalling Java and going to the Java website and seeing if you can't reinstall the software. (Reinstall after a reboot) See if that doesn't do anything.
