Strange Lockup Issues...

I just built my bro a computer, and he is having some strange issues. When he tries to run certain games, the games initial screen will come up before the menu loads (you know, the window that usually appears in the middle of the screen with the games name and such), but then it completely freezes and locks up. If you ctrl+alt+del when it gets stuck on that initial screen, it shows that no programs are actively running. After about 30 seconds it just completely freezes the entire PC, and the only way out is a manual reset. Here is what is really strange...when my brother tries to play Call of Duty Single Player, this happens. When he loads up the multiplayer it runs fine, and he can play for hours with no lockup issues at all...wtf? Other games that he told me freeze are Rainbow 6 3: Raven Shield, as well as the Sims: Makin Magic. He told me that the original Sims works fine. I am going to be running some diagnostics to test the memory and drivers tonight, but I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what the problem could be...

here are the specs:

-AMD Sempron 2400+
-MSI K7N2 Delta2 Motherboard
-Asus Geforce 6600
-512mb Wintec RAM
-WD Raptor 36gig SATA Hard Drive

*All of the drivers are up to date, and the motherboard came with the latest BIOS available. I also did things in the BIOS such as turn Fast-Writes off and made sure nothing was overclocked. I don't think this is a video issue, being Call of Duty multiplayer runs fine, but I am not sure. If someone has experienced something like this, or if they have any insight, I could use any pointers I can get to point me in the right direction. Thanks a ton in advance.

Did you try swapping the CDROM drive out? COD MP doesn't require the CDROM, all those other games, including COD Single Player, require a CDROM.

Yes, I actually thought of this and am going to swap them out, we'll see what happens. It seems as if it is simply failing to initialize, and it does not sound like the CD ever really starts to spin any faster when you click on the icon, so I am thinking that might be the problem. Anyways, thanks for the response.
