I just wish Akuma's ultra didn't suck so much in this game - so hard to land.

It does so much damage it couldn't be too easy to land or he'd be a powerhouse.

Of course, but I'd rather have an ultra you can combo in to that does less damage. Oh well.

I never liked Akuma, although I would go Sunburst mode on Sakura in Marvel vs Capcom 2 as a last resort and dominate.

Akuma's ultra is a pretty good mix up for anti-air. Try and bait them at a certain distance with fireballs, if they jump at you, spam the ultra and you'll land it since it'll catch them as they fall. Try and not make it obvious by baiting them to jump in every time you have ultra though since you're just tunnel visioning yourself.

I thought he was a joke cuz I've easily beat anyone that ever used him and I never tried him but you destroyed me. Your Boxer and Akuma are sick. I only play Sagat. I need to expand but I'm not even good with him.

I feel stuck like I'm not getting better now. I beat the scrubby scrubs but can't beat actual good players and I feel I'm not getting better.

Got my stick parts tonight. I tried an octogonal and I don't like it. I have to remove it tomorrow. I like the bat top though cuz I have big hands and it is taller. The buttons of course are way better.

yah i have never really used gouken but he's just so badass with his counters tht it makes me want to use him. i had read you could use his counter moves on ultra's, so that is why I tried it against you when you did one of em (cant remember who you were) and it actually worked! i was like woah!

i'm trying to get real good with balrog and i think i've improved pretty well with him. i honestly hadn't used akuma in like a week or so but he used to be my #1, but i find myself winning more with balrog than i used to with akuma. i was surprised i was timing those combos with akuma though, i usually have some trouble juggling the weak hurricane kick with the shoryuken, but i was nailing it almost every time heh.

you are not bad with sagat though. the one thing i noticed though is that you play really defensive. that may be why you feel as though you are stuck at your skills. you should try to work on attacking more instead of counter attacking.

this game is just as much about mind games as it is about blatant attacking, and with the defensive stance you can't really trick your opponents into seting themselves up like you can when you are attacking. that can be done with mind games.

a simple but somewhat "cheesy" example is the tick throw. all you have to do is jump in with fierce kick then crouch jab a few times. probably your opponent will block this if you do it when you are both standing around. however, that sets you up for the next time, and after you jump kick, do 1 low jab, then walk in for the throw.

since they are expecting you to keep mashing the jab button you can catch them off guard and land a throw.

again, that is a simple mind game, but effective. those are the kinds of mind games you gotta start trying. i try to play a few with Balrog and his overhead dash punch. you just gotta throw out a few low ones then you can catch them with the overhead one.

hi guys, sorry if this had been posted, but is there any sites to teach basic SF techniques? not how to combo but basic stuff like counter, priority, how to successfully pull off a dragon punch or a hadonken on a joypad etc.

Most of the guides I've seen assume some knowledge of street fighter already. Here are some pretty good guides.

Street Fighter 4 at Event Hubs
Street Fighter IV Wiki

Here are some thoughts about poking/footsies and mind games. It's intended for Super Street Fighter II: Turbo, but it basically applies to SF4. There are also sections for throws, supers, and reversals that aren't as universal, but are still useful.
Basics of ST by Ryza

Warning: terminology usage is suspect
Priority depends on hit boxes. Each character is comprised of hit boxes where they can be hit. Attacks they do also have hit boxes where the attacks would damage. Thus there are two different kinds of hit boxes. When an "attacking" hit box hits the opponent's "character" hit box, the opponent gets hit. Here is an illustration of hit boxes. It's Street Fighter 2, but I think it's the same idea in all incarnations. The blue hit box in the pictures is your character's hit box where you can get hit. The red hit box is the attack's hit box that shows it's range.

I will pathetically attempt to explain priority with hit boxes.

If you throw out a kick, typically the red hit box overlaps with the animation of the leg/foot. Your blue hit box (where you take damage) also moves in relation to the animation, but your character's hit box DOES NOT necessarily extend to your foot. ie, your foot's red hit box extends farther than your character's blue hit box.

If your opponent also throws a kick, he'll also have a red hit box for his/her foot and a blue hit box for his/her character where he/she can be hit. Priority is which red hit box hits the other player's blue hit box first. Each persons foot will possibly pass through each other because there is no blue hit box to hit. So who successfully scores a hit without being hit depends on which attack is fast enough and extends far enough to reach the opponent's character hit box first. If the two attacks reach the two characters at the same time, they trade hits.

That's basically priority. High priority attacks are attacks where the blue hit boxes are hid safely (or in some cases non-existent) while the red hit boxes extend far away. Speed of the attack is also important. Most attacks don't come out right away. ie, if you do a fireball, obviously you can see your character begin to throw a fireball before it comes out, and then you see them recover afterwards. It's the same thing with any kind of attack. There's a start-up and a recovery, where you are vulnerable (ie, you have no red hit boxes).

As for motions, are you referring to an arcade joystick or a joypad on a controller? Are you referring to how to physically perform the motion? If it's a joystick, you can search the internet for videos on "proper" ways to hold a joystick. There are many different styles.

Yeah thanks for the tips. I really think that playing the countless j.k ck shoryu kens has hurt the way I play because all you gotta do with them is be defensive and punish their shoryus. I'm gonna focus on playing differently

I just unlocked Seth last night, and he seems to be pretty good. Now, I only used him briefly, and not against any real competition. He's like a mix of Ryu/Dhalsim/Zangief. Doing Sonic Booms with a QCF + P motion is also awesome, since I don't care for charge moves.

Any more...experienced players have any comments on Seth? Is he a solid character, or just seems that way because of his moveset?

I did not like Gouken at all.

Seth is not a good character IMO. His weak stun meter is also bad, he's very easy to stun. I haven't played against 1 good Seth player, and actually every Seth player I've played against is really bad and tries to play like the AI does which is so predictable and easy to beat.

Gouken on the other hand is a complete badass! I've started to try and use him and am learning him. He has some really awesome moves and combos and is very unpredictable. He is very different than the other shoto characters since he doesn't have a dragon punch move, but he seems liek a character that would be really fun to play as and get good with IMO.

He is the next character I plan on trying to get good with.

Gootecks seems to thing Seth is good but I've never seen one.

He says if Seth has the lead in the round and ultra available there is basically no way to come back from it because if you stay away they can spam the sb and if you jump them even full screen away the ultra will catch you but I dunno that is theory and I've never seen a good Seth.

A friend of mine has a really good seth, but no videos of him since he doesn't main seth and their hasn't been any tourneys lately anyway.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ7Y0VFOA0g&fmt=18

That guy is one of the better Seth's as well, he doesn't make too much use of ultra, but he's got the links down though combos are kinda repetitive. I'd venture to my friend's seth is slightly better than his.

Turtle runaway Seth kills my Zangief. Seth has the wall double jump and teleport to play keep away and the battlefield is so large that he can keep running away. He has the sonic booms and long reach so it's hard to get in on him before he runs away again til the timer runs out.

for anyone that has both ps3 and xbox360 versions... are the quality of connections on the 360 for online games better than the ps3's? cuz sometimes on psn, it can be a downright struggle trying to find a good game. most of the time it's smooth as butter, but finding that person to connect to can be a bitch.

I play on xbox live and at 4000bp, it's kinda hard to find same skill/greater skill matches with 4 bars at wee hours of the night. Stability matches are available pretty much 24 hours a day though. I often play on PS3 at my friends house as well, but some days when I'm over and he's playing on PSN, I notice he'll sit in the lobby trying to find a game and it'll be sometimes more than 3 minutes before he'd actually get a decent 3 bar match and this is during prime time with the filter set to stability too. I've never had that issue on live personally.

man, I just can't win a ranked match. It seems like most of the time I can get really close, to within a cm of a KO both rounds, but i can never quite finish them off. Lately I've been doing a decent job of avoiding supers and ultras (especially akuma's) but totally failing to capitalize on the opportunity.

Oh well, I'll just go back to player matches.

lol, oh yea.. I quit on a guy for taking too long to pick a character. Fuck it, I've got no points to lose anyway. I'm not going to sit around while you decide which color Ken you wanna be.. Actually, I had talked myself out of just quitting while he was still in character select, but then he finally hit the button.. but then the asshole didn't have the game installed to hdd. THAT was the final straw. I hate sitting around at the Vs. screen waiting for the other guy to load.. It's not like its a PC game where two people might have vastly different system configs.. Install the game you fucking wanker.
