anyone know what i can do? It's a plextor premium CD-RW 52x32x52 or something like that, it was running at UDMA 2 until recently when i noticed my whole comp slowing down when burning a CD. I checked the transfer mode, and it was set to PIO only. I switched it to DMA if Available, but it's still on PIO mode. Anyone know something i can do?

Try removing your IDE controller from System properties and restart. When Windows redetects the ide controller it should reset the transfer speed to DMA, if it doesnt then you should try checking your IDE cable. Are you using a 40 wire or 80 wire cable and do you have another device hooked up to the cable?

80 wire cable, it's the only device. Primary Master is DVD-ROM - UDMA 4
Secondary Master is CD-RW - PIO ( should be UDMA 2 )
S-ATA HDD

XP uses an error counting system. If the IDE controller has a certain number of errors during data transfer, XP will begin to slow the speed down until no more errors occur. Uninstalling the controller, primary or secondary, resets the counter and usually reinstates your UDMA.

That's six errors it does. Upgrade your drive's firmware and your board's chipset drivers. What chipset does your board have?

I've uninstalled and reinstalled both the IDE Controller and the CD-RW, it's at UDMA 2 again now. I have a file to upgrade to Plextor Firmware 1.05, and I've done that. Is there anything else i could do to prevent it from having errors again?
Board is a MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR with Athlon XP 3200+. Dunno what chipset right now cos i'm in college

College students can figure out their chipsets, by looking at the board, it's manual, or web page. You have nForce2 The six errors things is most likely just a driver issue, if it's all fixed now don't worry about it, just make sure to get them installed next time you reformat/reinstall.

I had a problem with my CD-writer on an nForce 2 board as well, it just switched to PIO mode for no apparent reason and wouldn't switch back. Make sure you have the latest nForce drivers installed and install the Nvidia IDE drivers.
