Stupid DSL Sharing question?

OK, I'm not a moron. I know what I'm doing (or I don't), but I keep running into this stupid problem. I am using Telocity DSL service, which is actually working out great. But for some reason I keep losing the connection to their DSL modem from my server. My server is running Win2k AdvServ, and I'm using NAT to connect to the internet trough my network. But for some reason after 8-12 hours my computer loses the connection with the DSL modem and I have to disable the LAN adapter for 15 secs then enable it again. Then everything works great. No one I know can help and want to know if anyone out there ran into this, or if anyone knows of a script that will disable and re-enable the a network adapter every 8 hours. If I haven't given enough info please just tell me. Its 2am and I"m tired and sick of trying to fix this.

THANKS,

I'm not sure I understand your full scenario. Is this new machine at home or at work? Is it the only machine, or do you have lot's of machines on a LAN? What's running the NAT? When you lose connection to the NAT, can you see other machines? Maybe your DHCP lease is being expired every 8 hours, but your machine is not auto-renewing the lease, so it looks like you lose connection.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but need a bit more info....

Are you on the cheapy DSL, where they'll kill the connection if you're on for xx number of hours? Or are you on the more expensive where is unlimited time, always on?

It might be a "feature" of windoze.
I run win2k advanced server, and if I leave it on for a long time (1+ days), it will sometimes suddenly be unable to access the internet. (This is from behind a router, however)
I can simultaneosly telnet into my linux box, (also behind the same router) and connect to the internet without problems, so I know it's not the router's fault.

I have had this same problem with windoze 98/ME, it seems to be a Microsoft problem.

What can you do? Reboot, or install Debian.

I had this happen to me way back when I used Verizon DSL. How many NICs you have? What are the settings for each NIC? Do you get any messages in your event viewer? Static or dynamic IP? I need more details....

Anyway, the way I got everything to work as promised was using this: PPPoE

Hope it helps...

Does your DSL use TCP/IP or PPPoE? If your using PPPoE then your ISP is probably cutting you off.

I had the exact same problem as your having a while back when I used to run Napster all the time on my server.

Since then I've changed to an Intel NIC and quit running Napster. The problem has gone away but I'm not sure what fixed it.

I'm on bellsouth fastaccess DSL, and we have about 4 machines hooked up through the line via a LinkSys 4-port router.. using port-forwarding, and a separate print server.

Even before we installed the print server, and still now, the connection sometimes goes out every now and again and reconnects.. I think this has something to do with the IP though (bellsouth isn't static IP), but still, I have to reset the modem or else it stays offline till I do. This happens every few days.. sorry I couldn't be of much help, but I was just thinking about it and wanted to share my grief. I'm thinking of going cable.. most of my friends with cable modems are told by installers and tech guys that the IP isn't static, etc, etc, but it NEVER changes, release, renew, lose connection, whatever.. and their connection very rarely goes out.

Well, this post was pointless, but hey.. isn't everything?
