Stupid Parents

I had a perfect line on my laptop for college, everything and anything that I could ever need on it, plus I had wiggled my way into a pretty big discount that had brought the price down considerably. Propose the idea to the parents because they control the money, and my dad tells me to wait and that the prices will go down. Now i'm not one of those really emo kids who can't stand their parents, rather the opposite. But can anyone give me a good argument for buying the laptop now. I'm buying an IBM and after talking to a couple of people, i've figured out that the price will go down, but not enough to warrant me putting the purchase off. Thanks. Rant finished.

If you want it now, pay for it yourself, either:
Get a job.
Take out a loan from your local CU.

Otherwise, you're SOL. It's their money.

Wait until College starts, you don't need a laptop over the summer.

Also - care to share the discount strategy? I would love to get an IBM πŸ™‚

// I hope this is not sprinkling salt on your wounds, it took me 2 years to convince my parents to pay for my laptop.

your parents are right

T43's will get refreshed before school starts.

Prices may or may not go down, BUT you should be able to get a better laptop. So wait, get a better laptop, and if it is more expensive you can say "see I told you so" (parents love that!)

And you aren't buying and IBM anymore your buying a Lenovno.

Yeah, I heard that the line is about to get an upgrade of some sorts, and it really sucks that the line has been turned over to Lenovo. Just like the laptop over summer break. Oh and Jassi, it took me about a year and a half to convince my parents that I was smart enough to buy and build our new computer.

Your title choice doesn't match :Q

Prices always go down of course, hard to argue with that one. Sounds like you're in no position to argue anyway πŸ˜› But as a student, you can get Windows XP and Office for like $30 tops which should help reduce costs. And your loans/aid will usually apply to a computer. Maybe you'll do better for your kids...

My advice is to be happy and thank your parents for anything they give you. Who are you to be calling them stupid? If you want something then you better find yourself a job to pay for it.

I can give you advice for NOT getting it now. I made the mistake of buying a laptop the week after I graduated high school "in anticipation" for college. Idiot. I worked all summer and never used it, and 3 months later a whole new chipset and graphics card for laptops were out @ the same price. WAIT.

Just wait for it dude. I understand the anticipation of wanting something THAT bad (I've seen you on here & Thinkpads.com for the last few months πŸ˜›), but it is ALWAYS worth the wait. Prices will be better, you'll get more for your money, and be happy you did it. Just tell yourself *X600 for the price of an X300* πŸ˜‰ and all will be well

Good for you, I'd rather have my parents pay for it πŸ™‚

And for the OP... just wait man. I know it's hard but you probably don't need it now and something new always comes out just around the corner. I would probably suggest to them (if they were my parents) that I be allowed to purchase the notebook so that I recieved it with at very least 2 weeks before school started. This time will let you get aquainted with your new machine, move files over, install programs, etc...

BTW, thank mommy and daddy, and assure them that everything they are giving you is appreciated. Don't wrap daddy's Porsche around a tree... I have found that it's not a successful method of getting a lappy...

you could probably get a much better deal (or at least laptop) during the back to school rush.

Wait. I made a mistake of buying my laptop over the summer, when I didn't really need it. And now I could get an insanel equipped I9300 for the same price. But then again, I wouldnt have found Anandtech, DC, home built computers, AMD, etc. if I hadn't been shopping around first. So I have no remorse.

But basically, wait, prices will go down, or technology will get better, hopefully both at the same time.

Historically speaking, your parents are exactly correct. Laptop prices continue to drop every year. Check E-Bay for some really good bargains.

They are correct, but the excuse is lame. The prices are always going down, duh.

You better understand that you will not be able to use equipment most needed for the job you can't get what you always want especially as a potential Marine officer. You better use what you have. If you have to lead Marines with nothing but a e-tool and a jock strap, you better get freaking the mission accomplished!

Well, normally I always recommend not to wait. There is always something cheaper coming out later, so you have to buy at some point in time. If you can use it now, buy it.

However, in your case you should figure whether you can actually wait because of the summer. If you only need it after summer.

The rebate situation is special, too. I should have jumped on a Dell deal when they had insane coupons up to the second week of April. They won't be coming back over summer. But in the IBM case you can assume they do.
