So I'm having a talk with my ex over some texts.. how I might smoke MJ every now and then.

She says she's very disappointed in me, for smoking weed. I tell her that in many states there is decriminalization, especially CA. There are major discussions going on for legalizing MJ, and in 2010 I believe the bill for it is going to be introduced. The fines for it are just like speeding ticket fines, which is one step closer to acknowledging that weed is no worse than alcohol.

She says she thinks it's wrong because it's just plain illegal. I laughed and said so if it were legal you would be ok with it? She said no. I told her that alcohol was once illegal, and my great grandma and many other Americans still made it against the governments rulings.

I asked her why she hated it so much. She says because it's smoking, and it impairs your judgement. I said it's smoking sure, but smoking to get a high seems a lot smarter than smoking cigarettes. I tell her Canada and Holland both have it legalized, if it's so bad why would any places think about legalizing it at all? It impairs your judgement, but so does alcohol.

I tell her then you can pretty much make any argument against weed, also against alcohol. She goes out one night a week, has 5 beers. I don't see how that's any different than somebody using moderation on weed.

Is it just me, or do a lot of people just hate weed because it is illegal in some places and they can't come up with a better argument than that? It's like that recent episode of Penn and Teller's Bullshit, when they argue against organic foods. They had two plates of organic and inorganic fruit/veggies that were not labeled. Most people decided they liked the inorganic food better, but were severely disappointed when they found out it was inorganic, and said they would just continue to eat organic food because they were told it's good for them and it's "natural" from the earth. These people are BRAINWASHED.

Ex then says, Well good luck finding a girl that is cool with you smoking MJ. I tell her I'm still young, have had two main relationships that lasted for more than a year, and I'm not really looking for a 3rd any time soon, maybe in a few years.

Cliffs:
1. Have an argument with Ex about weed and why it's bad
2. I shoot down everything she says about it
3. I can't believe the bullishness and how many people will insist that something is bad because it's illegal and yet they can't find any reason why it should be illegal other than the fact that it's illegal now.
4. Ex almost didn't want to be friends, but then looked past it and said she just doesn't want to hear about me doing it. Doesn't matter because I tend to keep it away from most people and not let the cat out of the bag till I know their stance on it.

Exactly.. She also tried to pull the "People who smoke MJ are dumb!" card.

I told her really now? do you consider me dumb? I've got a 3.5 GPA throughout college, almost graduated with a bachelors degree. I've got a pretty good part time job doing tech support with awesome benefits. I don't really see why I am dumb.. I told her a lot of people that smoke weed are fucking stupid, I'll agree there. However, there are also lots of stupid people who drink alcohol, and there are just lots of stupid people in general.

Where the hell did you hear that it is decriminalized in CA?

If you think a state can decriminalize, your knowledge of how laws work is lacking.

Well.. I've heard from multiple people and news that in CA if under 1 ounce is carried there is basically a Parking ticket fine.

Possession of marijuana is a misdemeanor under California Health and Safety Code Section 11357. Possession of one ounce (28.5 gms) or less is punishable by a maximum $100 fine. Jail time is possible for larger amounts or for hashish, which is an optional felony ("wobbler"). However, under Prop 36, effective July 1, 2001, first- and second- time possession-only offenders may demand a treatment program instead of jail. Upon successful completion of the program, their conviction is erased. Possession (and personal use cultivation) offenders can also avoid conviction by making a preguilty plea under Penal Code 1000, in which case their charges are dismissed upon successful completion of a diversion program. Possession offenses are expunged from the record after two years under Health and Safety Code Sections 11361.5 and 11361.7.

Possession of one ounce or less in a vehicle while driving may also be charged under Vehicle Code 23222 (the drunk driving statute).

No arrest or imprisonment is allowed for possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. However, police often get around this provision by charging minor offenders with intent to sell

I got into a discussion with a girl on pof.com about "drugs"

She has pictures of her drinking wine on her profile.

She says she would never date a guy who has ever done drugs in his life.

I asked her what if the guy, who has never drank alcohol, tried pot once ten years ago and decided he didn't like it. She said no way, because drugs are bad for you.

I told her that alcohol is actually worse for you than pot, it's proven and that unless she's never had a beer or glass of wine, she's being hypocritical, because she's saying she won't date someone who has done drugs, when in fact, alcohol is a drug, is much worse for your body, and actually causes much greater impairement.

I asked her if she was going to update her profile to include guys who have never drank beer because otherwise people will think she's a hypocrite.

She never replied lol

It's just that due to the stigma, smart people won't admit smoking and won't advertise that they are for legalization.

LOL, nice. It's just so funny how people are so stubborn about it yet they can't defend their own views.

Its a misdemeanor that carries a fine and you can lose your license for if caught driving with it. Not exactly like driving with a closed beer.

There's a perfectly good reason.

It's bad because it's illegal, and illegal because it's bad.

Truly intelligent people would never think that they had to personally be involved in an activity to want it legal. I'm never going to have an abortion, not having a womb and all, but that doesn't mean I don't support the rights of other people to get one. I don't smoke pot all that frequently (once every 6 months, maybe), but my support for legalization has absolutely nothing to do with me wanting to be able to smoke pot; I support the rights of people to do activities that are only harmful to themselves if they damn well please. Intelligent people who hide their views and deny being for legalization because of the stigma are helping contribute to a society that worships ignorance. Doesn't seem that smart to me... more cowardly.

Yeah but don't those paragraphs say basically the conviction will be dropped by completing a diversion program, or by "treatment program?"

I remember having a similar discussion with my GF a while back. Fast forward 3 years, I don't smoke anymore because I think it's bad.
I don't think weed made me perform worse in school, but it did plunder through my ego and my character by making me self conscious and overthink about stupid shit all the time, aka depression.
YMMV though. But I'd be careful not to get caught up in the negative thoughts.

I've had this conversation multiple times with ex-gfs who argue it's bad "just because" (such a fun argument)

You can't win, some people have just been brainwashed. The best thing about these arguments though is waiting a couple years and finding out the anti-ppl have become huge potheads after/during college. Always makes me laugh.

I'm not a fan of any recreational drug (That includes alcohol and Cigarettes). However, I do believe that it is somewhat hypocritical the MJ is illegal and alcohol is not. Pretty much everything that I've read about the subject puts MJ as a much safer drug then alcohol is. IMO part of the reason MJ is illegal in the US is that MJ is easy for anyone to grow. Back in the day, it might have been used to kill off the tobacco industry.

That's exactly it. They've been so indoctrinated by the drug war propoganda, media and anti-drug programs that they really can't bring themselves to look outside that world-view.

It doesn't compete with tobacco, so that's a non-issue.

I'm for legalization and I have never smoked MJ (or cigarettes) in my life. I will never do it either even if it is legal.

Some people are just pussies who don't have to balls to give a good reason for their opinion.
