With three different hard drives and multiple attempts, I've yet to break the 8 MG size limitation. I've downloaded "help" files from microsatan. I've visited IBM which has downloadable software. All I want to do is format a 40 GB Deskstar as a single drive. I'll gladly render unto Ceasar (windows) their stinking allocation. But what about me! Where are the other 32 GBs which are rightfully mine! All MINE!! I'm at the end of my tether and might do something stupid. HELP!

tanks,

PS

yes, the K7s5a bios recognizes the hard drive capacity

fdisk and delete all partition/extended partitions. Then set the partitions again When it ask if you want to use the maximum size for partition say no. I t should show the full drive, when it aks what % you want to use, if it doesnt then you have a partition that you have not deleted

You may think it is recognizing the size properly, but its not. You may need a new BIOS or a utility from the hard disk manufacturer to get it to work. You should make sure the head-cyl-sectors values are showing up correctly and match whats on the hard drive. If they do and it still doesn't work, see if there is a new BIOS out for this board.

Win98 - max 127GB FAT32 partition (due to ScanDisk limitation, other wise max of 2TB)
Win2k - max 32GB FAT32 partition (due to MS limitation on support for Win2k FastFat)

<< Note that FDISK in Win98 has troubles with drives greater than 64GB. For more information and an update to FDISK.EXE, please see this page at Microsoft.

Also note that Windows 95 WILL NOT support drives larger than 32GB in size.

Thanks Steven the Leach.
If one doesn't accept the maximum partition size, what would be conventional sizes for Win 98 SE? If the choice of a size were offered, what would you recommend. Second, accepting the maximum partition size implies the 8GB limitation. In viewing the other choices in FDISK, my attempts at reclaiming the rest of the hard drive is prevented in that it staes drive is 100% utilized.
Your comments are helpful. I'm gathering all the information I can to do this correctly because I don't want spend another afternoon re-installing my hardware and drivers, once I can get this right, I will only have to do this one more time.
Okay, so we define a smaller percentage partition size. Does FDISK recognize the remaining GBs (up to 40 GBs) in my case to be made available for use and than one could proceed with formatting the remaining disk rescources?

I personally guarantee 50 cents for the best help.

Thanks Earthman,

In Bios, it initially was set to auto. I have changed it to the user section a couple days ago and it correctly lists the drives attributes: cylinders, heads, etc.

Agian, I'm not trying to be lame other than completly peice together a correct partition and format effort with as much information I can get. I'll re-read the information from Microsatan and Ibm and consider the words of advice offered here.

I've looked all over this site and Tom's Hardware guide, etc. for initial partition and format questions and haven't seen any. The only think I can guess is this must be a sTuPiDmAn! original. (the only guy ever not to be able to partition a hard drive correctly).
