sudden cpu temp spikes

hi

i am having some issues with my reported cpu temps on my system as listed below in my sig...

first of all, i monitor my cpu, core1, core2, and hd temps with SpeeFan. i also use my onboard AI Suite and PC Probe (ASUS) which give me the same readings as SpeedFan for my temps and voltages. i check with these onboard applications and Coretemp just to verify that my SpeedFan readings are accurate, or at least reflected by other measuring apps...

what is happening is that suddenly my CPU temp goes up from around 35C to 85C-88C and if i have PC Probe on then it starts flashing warnings about the cpu temp, etc.
if i check with my AI Suite, CoreTemp, etc., they all agree that my cpu is suddenly at 85C !
nothing else changes. my core temps remain in the 20's, my vcore does not change, my hd temps stay the same, etc. if i raise my fan speeds, it does not bring the cpu temp down. if i reboot everything returns to normal.

i am starting to think that this is some sort of problem with the sensor, and in fact the last time it happened (just now) i did not frantically shut down. the computer did not crash...in fact it is still at 85C as i type this... it has been 10-15 minutes now...

any ideas?

I had spikes as well, if you search on my name with spikes I'm sure you can find the thread. No time to find it right now, but I will later today, coz I made a screenshot of how it looked. My spikes didn't last though, they would go down as suddenly as they went up.

hi

thanks for the replies...when this phenomenon happens, i have compared readings with SpeedFan, CoreTemp, PCProbe, AISuite...all report that my core1 and core2 temps remain stable and low...Coretemp does not give "cpu" temp like the others, just core temps...

it happened again last night and i felt brave so i just let the computer continue to idle for over an hour. no stability issues or crashes or temp changes of any kind. i even did some audio editing with no issues.

i decided to lower my OC a bit so now i am running as seen in my sig below; i had been at 3.0Ghz 1.325 vcore. this has lowered my temps some (cpu temp is currently 32C and cores are at 22C/20C), but this was before the spike happened again so it doesn't seem to be related to any OC'ing issues.

it has occured to me that this may have something to do with the fact that i recently installed a Sunbeam Rheobus fan controller. i had connected my rear fan, 2 front hd fans (Antec Solo), and my Arctic cpu fan to the Sunbeam. when i boot up with this configuration my mobo gives me a cpu fan warning because it is no longer connected to the mobo...i disregard (F1) and the computer boots up and the fans run fine.

i have just taken the cpu fan off of the Sunbeam and i am monitoring and controlling its speed once again with SpeedFan. maybe my mobo doesn't like having the cpu cooler disconnected? i will report back if the spikes go away. fingers crossed...

am i correct that if the cpu spike was real and i did nothing that my computer would shut down or burst into flames?

also can you tell me exactly what he "cpu" temp is measuring in SpeedFan, PCProbe, etc.?

thanks agin

peace

bump with new info

well it spiked again after i put the cpu fan back on the mobo so it doesn't seem to be related to the fan controller...

this time the temp went up only to 68C instead of 85C

also this time i noticed that every now and then (randomly) the cpu temp goes from 68C to -1C and back in an instant!

then i went outside with the dog and when i came back in after 20 min the computer had rebooted and there was a windows error message :

D:\DOCUME~1\CHRIST~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6158.dir00\Mini101007.dmp
D:\DOCUME~1\CHRIST~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6158.dir00\sysdata.xml

Error signature
BCCode : 7f BCP1 : 00000000 BCP2 : 00000000 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

( it is drive D: because i run a dual boot and this is the partition i am currently using...)

any further thoughts on what could be happening are much appreciated

peace

I would double-check your HSF attachment to the CPU. Perhaps one of the pins is loose, and it is intermittently not making good contact with the CPU.

IIRC, that's a mini dump. It's caused by either a failing stick of RAM, or running your RAM too fast, or having your RAM timings too low, or not giving your RAM enough vdimm.

thanks for the replies

the HSF seems to be mounted fine, and as i said my core temps and system stability are fine other than that one random mini dump...

well i made a huge mistake and decided to try an updated bios for this board, but instead of downloading the file and doing it manually, i used the onboard asus update utility. i have since learned that others have bricked their mobos by doing this...

after updating bios i could not boot into windows, nor will the mobo allow me to revert to the old bios...long story short, i restored my partition using acronis true image and computer will boot and run normally, EXCEPT it will not boot unless i first unplug my external usb drive!
i have no idea what's going on with this. i can turn it on once i am at the desktop and it is functional. i have checked boot order in the bios, etc., but cannot resolve the problem. i could just get into the habit of powering up without the hd connected , but then i have to climb under my desk to turn it on (it has no power switch; it powers up once it connects to the computer)

anyway i think i will rma this mobo and start from scratch...

one last question; the last thing i did on this computer was swap out my noisy ultra psu for a corsair 450vx. has anyone heard of conflicts with this psu? i am not convinced that this is what started the cpu temp jump, i think it may have been going on already but i only noticed it because after puting in the new psu i was watching my temps just to check for problems...

Sorry for being off topic but how do you get SpeedFan to show the temp of each core in a 2 core system?

I have both SF v4.33 and v4.34 Beta.

Thanks!

it has been a while since i played with this, but you have to go into the "configure" tab and check off sensors and temps, etc
if you go into your program files and open the speedfan folder you can click on the help file which gives a good explanation
