At 50" your only options are DLP or Plasma and it's no contest...Plasma is better. As for your price requirements, you have very few options in a 1080p plasma as most would be around $2000.
In DLP well, you can find 50" Samsung sets for about $1200.
Personally I don't like DLP and would prefer LCD or Plasma, but at 50" they don't make true LCDs. They are rear projection LCDs which are lower overall picture quality.
If you wouldn't mind 720p then you can get 50" Plasma sets for under $1500 easily.
