Here is what I need the device to do.

1. Play video. I watch a lot of ripped TV shows and the occasional movie.
2. Surf the web.
3. Thats about it.

I have a Ipod Touch I bought thinking it would satisfy me but I have been very disappointed. The wifi is slow(wouldn't be as bad but the site must be fully loaded before you can move around.) and the screen is just to small. I realize it is an MP3 player at heart and I am trying to use for everything but. I am thinking EEEpc or something similar. Any other ideas or suggestions? What model eeepc? This need not be new, used is fine, but has to be south of $400.

If you're fine with the smaller resolution, the first gen eee should be fine. I used it to watch office episodes on a recent trip and it was nice, not too big and not too small.

Web surfing is a little bit harder (sometimes you'll have to scroll horizontally), but it was fine as well.

I am just trying to find a compromise. I screen on the touch is just to small and the form factor makes it uncomfortable after a while. Is the resolution of the eeep high enough fir decent image quality? Obviously I am not looking for HD quality here but at least comparable to regular tube TV would be alright.

The eee 800 x 480 is DVD resolution.

Hot Deals / GottaDeal / Sunday paper for a $400 regular laptop, Staples has a $400 Compaq with 15" screen right now.

With the eee you get a small screen and a 600 - 900 MHz Celeron that might struggle with some of your video. It weighs half as much as the Compaq above though.

Screen size and power or light wieght? We report, you decide.

As Gizmodo said, Asus priced the eee pc out of the market that it created. Right now, the king of on-store-shelves-right-now-netbooks is the Acer One. The lowest configuration is $400, but it is only available with linux right now. The windows xp one should come out soon, though.

The acer looks very nice. Should have plenty of power for my needs, but when is it coming out?

I haven't been able to find it from the usual suspects(amazon, newegg, etc.) but it should be about any day from the looks of things.

Almost forgot about the MSI Wind. The winner is probably going to be whichever is actually available first. Though I think I would prefer the 8GB SSD over 80GBHDD on the Wind but the extra screen space would certainly make for a better viewing exp[experience in the wind. The Dell offering looks promising but from the looks of it, it is going to be a while before it is out and likely overpriced like the EEEPC 901.

Try and find a used IBM X40 or X41 - 2.7 lbs, 12" LCD, and the 'normal' workings of a PC, and none of the limitations of the cheaper netbooks. They can be found for under $350 (for the X40) - I love mine and heartily recommend it to anyone looking for a lightweight and durable platform with good battery life.
