I never had a snes, so I never played Super Mario World. I bought it for the wii and couldnt get past the third castle with the gamecube controller i bough. So I went and got a classic controller and was able to beat that castle. This game is pretty damn tough, maybe my old-school skills have diminished.

I just wish you could save the game when you wanted rather than waiting to beat a castle or hit a "!".

There seems to be tons of secrets as well. I found the red "!", got the secret level from the first lava level. Went in the pipe, beat the next 2 levels but still working on that castle.

My memory could be failing me, but I'm pretty sure you can save whenever you want (from the World map) if you press Select or something. You should have the option to Continue, Save & Continue, or Save & Quit; something like that anyway.

The Mario games were pretty easy imo, and World was one of the best ever. And yeah, what R Nilla said, you can save after each level or when you die etc.

I thought so, too, but maybe that's only in the GBA port.

I thought you could only save after a castle or fortress or ghost house or something.

Looks like you might be right:

The save system is now enhanced to save whenever rather than at specific points.

It's been a while since I've played the actual SNES version, so I must have confused it with the GBA version.

on SNES i believe you could only save after the castle or ghost house.

however, you can replay the ghost house and save after. i used to go to the first ghost house and save afterwards because it's so short and easy.

also a little secret, you can replay the castles by holding L+R when selecting them while over the crumbled castle (i believe that is what you hold).

super mario world is such an awesome game, that is definitely one of the all time greatest games ever.

if you think that part is hard, wait until you get to the super secret star world levels (if you do )

you can pause the wii version and go back to the wii menu and it'll save state wherever you are.

Also, there are 96 exits and unless you're in the special zone that you get to from the star road, you haven't gotten anywhere near where you should be calling the game "hard" Tubular is just this --> <-- far from being impossible.

I remember being like 12 and getting extremely frustrated by that castle so don't feel TOO bad. Fucking wizards.

Lies.

Did you beat SMB1 and Lost Levels?

I've never been able to get past maybe the third or fourth area in any Mario game, ever. I remember trying to play SMB3 on my Wii when I still had it, and it took me like 10 tries to get through the very first area, and even then I'd usually run out of lives somewhere in the second or third area.

If you get on top of Vanilla Dome, I think in the third stage up there, there's an exploit for essentially unlimited lives. It's on the stage that starts out with some rolling hills with a whole bunch of Koopas... get to the spot in the stage where there's a p-block, bring it back to the turtles, stomp it, then they all turn to silver coins. After the first ten or so coins, you're getting five 1UPs per coin

If you get all 96 exits you get a start by the file when you start. This is my favorite Mario game - 2D gaming at its best!

I still relish the moment I got all exits in Super Mario World. Great game!

Dude...I've beaten every Super Mario game except Mario Sunshine. That game is F'ing insanely hard when you get near the end. Some of the challenges are extremely difficult as well. Seriously one of the best Mario games ever. Anyone who laughs at it without truly playing it (yeah it's a bit too cutesy) is doing themselves a disservice if they like platformers.

I just thought it was a bit uneven, there were simple stages, and maybe ten stages that made me wonder what they were thinking. I haven't finished it a second time, and I don't think it's in the cards

Super Mario World is my most favorite game of all time. Period. I remember it being frustrating at times, but I wouldn't call it difficult. Back in the day, I remember going through it a couple of times and getting every single thing there was to get. The star road was pretty awesome.

*** SPOILER!!!!!! ***
The hardest thing I remember having to do was doing the level on the lower wooden bridge on the map, and you basically have to get a cape, fly into the air, and keep afloat all the way to the end of the level. Before you cross the finish line, you have to dive all the way to the bottom of the screen, and pull back so you dip underneath the finish line and land on the ground behind it. I think this was one of the ways to the star road.

Hardest level for me was called (I think) "Tubular" in the special stage. The one where you fly around as a balloon buddha.

Yeah that's pretty tough, however, you can cheat and get by with a blue yoshi almost effortlessly.

It's not cheating. It's using your resources available to you =)

I love SMW. One of my favorites.. even more so than SMB3. The New SMB on the DS I love too for the nostalgic value. And mario galaxy was awesome.. but I only had enough patience to do 100 stars, heh.

See the responses in this thread makes me want to go play. I don't think I played past the third level in SMW.

You should. You didn't even get the cape, right?

I'm sure you can save more often than at a castle or ghost house. According to Wiki's Super Mario World page, you could save after every other level.
