I love the 10-10-220 commercial with Flutie and Bradshaw.
Bradshaw------->"You forgot to cook this".
Looks like bait, smells like bait, must be bait.

I will just stick to fried shrimp

raw fish makes me want to hurl

I cannot see how it is appetizing

I love beef and chicken though

MMm... sushi.

I cannot afford the good stuff so I stick to all you can eat sushi joints and stuff myself silly about once a month.

I am fine sticking with the basics of tuna, salmon and yellowtail rolls.

Although, the Philly roll is one of my favs.... mmmmm.. cream cheese...

It's actually not all raw....some items such as spicy tuna maki and anago (saltwater eel....one of my faves) are cooked. Do they even have sushi in Ohio?

I'll admit, I was a little skeptical the first time I tried it, but it's really grown on me. My wife and I will go out for sushi at least once a month (being in Atlanta, we are lucky to actually have some really good sushi bars). My faves: hamachi, saba, tobiko, anago and of course toro. Yum!

99% of sushi is great. Get some nice sake (salmon) and some unagi (eel). Great stuff.

Avoid the Uni (sea urchin). No matter how sophisticated you think it will make you, you'll just vomit like the rest of us. It's like eating snot on rice.

No, no no...you're thinking about it all wrong. You've got to think primal....."ME MAN!!! EAT RAW MEAT!!! RAAAAAAARRRRGHGHGHGG!!!!" </pounds chest>

Start with some of the basic stuff like california rolls and similar. The rolls (maki) in general are less "weird" to eat as the meat is with rice, veggies and wrapped up. Then try some of the nigiri (basically a pat of rice with a piece of fish on top) once you get a taste for it. Tuna, salmon and yellowtail are (IMO) the most palatable off the bat to someone new to sushi.

For the best fish, sit at the bar, tell the chef you're new to sushi and ask him to pick out what's good that day for you. They're usually more than happy to do so and that way you'll get the freshest stuff (very important....anything less than very fresh tastes like cat food).

Bon Appetit!!

I agree, although I usually stick to the rolls.

Thanks ggavinmos and Fausto1 for the advice. Now I just need to find a decent sushi bar so I can build up a taste for it before I go out with her. I can just see myself pulling something similar to that scene in Tom Cats when Jerry O'Connel and Shannon Elizabeth are at the sushi bar and he spits the sushi across the table and into her glass.

You got back with your gf?

I love sushi. Right now, my favorite is Toro, it is a bit expensive. Spicy California roll is quite good too.

As for eels, I prefer Unagi over Anago.

No, different girl. She's not really a girlfriend, just an interest right now. Why? You interested?

I know...I try to use a few phrases to be polite, but it just makes everyone laugh. I'll eat just about anything other than the Uni and the small pickled baby octopus. Those are both too funky for me.

mmmmmmmmmm.......sweet potato tempura rocks. You'll have to try the vidalia onion tempra if you ever find yourself in GA.

Because it has to be super-duper fresh or it's not worth eating. Plus the chefs are (hopefully) highly trained individuals. The head chef at the place I usually go to is even licensed to prepare and serve Fugu back in Japan (blowfish....poisonous as hell if not prepared correctly).

is doesn't look like it's that hard to cut the fish, then wrap it in the freakin rice.

i don't think it should be as expensive as it is
