SUV's get a bad rap!

I am sick of SUV bashing. Most SUV's sold get only slightly worse gas mileage than most V6 sedans. The Explorer, Blazer, Cherokee, and other SUV's of that ilk get decent mileage for what they are. The HUGE SUV's like the Ford Excursion, Chevy Suburban, yeah they get lousy mileage, but they are only a small fraction of SUV sales. The Ford Explorer gets 16 mpg / 21 mpg while the V6 Honda Accord gets 20 mpg / 28 mpg. Sure the Explorer is worse, but not much worse! I am sick of people looking at the lousy gas mileage of say the Ford Excursion and then lumping all SUV's into the same category.

Actually, the difference between 16/21 and 20/28 is quite significant, 20/28 being around 30% more efficent...

I'll go ahead and post this in this thread as well, I am sure AaronP does not mind me turning his thread into a huge flame fest

Right now it is hip to hate SUVs and smokers, well thats all fine, but what is next.....................

Will fast food and fattening things be next?

Will high powered computers and over sized TVs be next?

Will perfumes and cologne with over powering smells be next?

Will high powered sports cars be next?

Will cars that carry less than 6 passengers be next?

Maybe the government will decide how large of a square footage house is reasonable for the number of people who live there. 1 person = 1000 sq ft 2 people gets you 1500 sq ft etc.

Maybe the government will mandate that the thermostat in your house will go no higher than 68 in winter, and 78 in summer. Never say it could not happen, this is the same government that gave you 1.6 gallon toilets.

HATE SUVs and smokers all you want, but damn sure dont cry when it is YOUR personal freedom that is under attack next.

that may be so Eli, however IMO the SUV offers a lot of things that the Accord can't, you ride much higher up, I don't know about you guys, but I like riding HIGH! Also, it is much safer, roomier, and you can haul some cargo around, and it's not like you're gettin 9 MPG here.

the point is not that the milage is less. its that most people who own SUVs use them for the exact same reasons as those cars, except that they drive like complete crap because they think they are super safe in their huge, sight blocking cars. people say suvs are good since they can carry more people. well if you wanted to carry people you'd get a van. And other people just drive them like normal cars so why not get a normal car. If you actually offroaded then maybe you have a point but thats like what 1% of suv drivers. I dunno both my parents drive SUVs and they seem to be the best example of anti-practicality.

Check the EPA rating for the big Lexus and BMW sedans, they will not be nearly as miserly on fuel consumption, and still dont have the cargo capacity of a SUV.

A lot of nutjobs actually believe that. That's the scary part.

Enviromentalists should LIKE gas guzzlers (which as I said, most SUV's aren't) because we will run out of gas faster and be forced to alternative fuels.

I still do not get the huge fascination people have with whether or not people take SUVs off road. What damn difference does it make?

If I am driving my Expedition, and have to slow down on a curve behind a sports car, does this mean the driver of the sports car should not be able to own his car since he is not using it to the full extent for which it was designed? This is a wholly baseless argument.

I bought a 4x4 SUV beacuse of 2 words.....resale value. The resale value of a 4x4 vs.2x4 SUV is astronomical. I even use 4 wheel drive on occasion, but not that often, but the resale value is well worth buying one, whether I ever take it off-road or not.

plus the 4 wheel drive is GREAT when the roads are covered with ice or snow.

I'm not some extreme environmentalist or anything.. but it's not hard to see destruction, decimation, and rape.. You guys need to understand that it's not just some game, People.. as a race.. are going to suffer.. much more than we are now.. if we don't start taking responsibility for our actions..

Our planet isn't an infinate garbage can.. lol

SUVs get a bad rap simply because they are viewed as excessive by just about everyone
who doesn't own one yet. The reason why luxury sedans don't get a bad rap over fuel
economy is because people's beef with those cars/owners has more to do with anti-elitism.

Actually, bad gas mileage is the SUV owner's problem. The lack of visibility is my problem.
Also, if I had to guess, in real life V6 SUV's get better or same gas mileage than V6 cars, simply because most SUV owners accept that their trucks are slow and drive more conservatively, while those of us with V6 cars like Maxima like to floor it once in a while to peel out of a stop sign I don't know, that's prolly just me.

If visibility is the reasoning here, we should also ban:

UPS trucks
Fed-Ex trucks
Bobtail delivery trucks
custom vans
church vans
delivery vans
18 wheelers
mobile homes
large tow trucks
USPS mail trucks
glass delivery trucks
Travel Trailers
Motor Home
Most any other RV
