Swap motherboard without OS reinstall?

I've got a Windows XP Pro machine that I will upgrade to a new motherboard (old: Epox w/amd xp1800, new: Asus K8N w/amd64). Will I need to reinstall the OS or can I expect to just boot into windows after connecting the hard drive?

Same question for Mandrake Linux 9.2

The installation of the OS depends on the chipset you have on your motherboard. So, you will have to change your OS...

I've done what you described before without a reinstall. Just install the drivers after you reboot.

However, sometimes xp hates you for doing that. YMMV on this procedure.

Minendo: One suggestion in the "Helping Windows Survive a Motherboard Upgrade" was to change your hardware, then boot with the Windows XP disk, point to your existing Windows installation and tell it to do a repair. Sounds like that is worth at try. Thanks.

XP can't boot with a new motherboard for two reasons: Different HAL (not an issue here, most likely) or different disk controller. Just change the disk controller you use to the standard PCI IDE controller (while the drive is in the old motherboard) and then shutdown - then power up with the drive in your new motherboard, and you'll be all set. I'm assuming you're using parallel ata drives.
