I was thinking about switching my 3800 with a 165. Do you guys think its worth the trouble selling my 3800 to get the 165? Also do u think it's reasonable to hope for atleast 2.4 - which is what i have my 3800 at with 1.4v

I switched, & i'm happy i did.
I went from an older X2 3800+ barely stable @ 2.4 GHz to an Opteron 165 0551 stable around ~ 2.7 GHz.
However, you're not likely to see an benefit from doing so unless benchmarking is all you do
Also, damn, the Optys do run a lot hotter :\

If your current CPU is an X2 3800+, don't bother. If it's a single core 3800+ maybe.

Yep, but as others said, it's no guarantee you're going to get 2.7ghz on your opt 165. It's likely you'll only reach 2.4ghz to 2.5ghz which is a very respectable overclock. But, it's not worth the cost of going from a 3800+ to a opt.165 for a small speed bump. Maybe if you were guaranteed to hit 2.7ghz and up...

I would only switch to Opty 165 if you can get either a 0550, 0608 or 0610 stepping. These can go up to 2.9GHz on stock voltage (1.35-1.40V), otherwise it's not worth it...
