Switching to AMD PLEASE HELP!

I currently have a Socket 478 P4 2.4ghz processer. It has a measly 500mhz FSB and runs very hot. About 50C idle. I am running it on an ABIT IC7-G. I was wondering if I should switch to AMD, say maybe a 3200 and get a new board.

I want to overclock as much as possible and heard the 3200 clocks about the same as the 3400, so it is better to get the first one. Any help please?

You should go with the 3000+ 0.09um A64 if you're overclocking. The chips are cheap and generally hit 2500mhz. You could keep your current DDR memory. It would be a cheap upgrade and would give you a massive performance boost. The pre-800FSB P4s were really bad in terms of performance in many areas.

Sell your old stuff on FS/FT and you should be able to upgrade for very little money. :thumbsup:

May I ask why the 3000 and not the 3200 (Well, any reasons besides price)

I actually like the 3200 for the larger multiplier and less vcore needed for the same OC a 3000 can do. Of course, every cpu is differemt and that may not always be true, but I'd feel safer with the 3200.

ok cool, I was thinking the 3200 myself. What do you recommend socket 939...anything else i need to know before buying it. Anyone good steppings or models I should know about.

At this point I think they all are the same stepping. Only thing to watch for is some mobos need a bios flash to recognize the new winchesters. I forget which do though.

Is there a certain type that is better for overclocking, winchester or newcastle, etc. I want mine to be 939 though.

winchester is the 90nm ones, and all 3000 and 3200 are winchesters on s939 . They OC the best too.

I actually just ordered the 3200+(939)/MSI K8N Neo2 Plat/1gig(512x2) Crucial ballistix pc4000.. Hopefully it can hit 250x10...
