System Freeze Problems - HELP!!!

Here's the story -

Every 5 seconds (stays constant), my entire system freezes for a split second and then goes on like it never missed a beat. For example, when I move my mouse continuously, it stops and starts again every 5 seconds. The same thing happens when I'm typing or doing whatever. The clock on my computer also get progressively behind because of this. I've had the same problem even though I've changed memory brands and upgraded my power supply. I don't have anything in my system overclocked, so that's not an issue here. My basic specs are as follows-

1GHz Athlon processor (Slot A classic)
ABIT KA7 motherboard
256MB CAS2 PC133 Crucial (1 DIMM)

The system did the same thing when I was running 256MB of Muskin PC150 Enhanced HSDRAM and an Antec PP-303X 300W power supply. Does anyone have any idea on what might be the problem? Any help at all would be appreciated - this has me completely confused. Thanks in advance!

make sure dma is enabled, that is probably the culprit.

i had the same problem... a format of the ENTIRE hard drive fixed it... was weird, cuz i just formatted the partition where my OS was, and reinstalled, and had same problem... so i fdisked, deleted all the partitions, started over, and it fixed it... i will assume you are using win98se (simply because that's what i was using when i encountered the problem) and i've never heard of it happening on win2k. i tried to click on your link to more computer info, but nothing ever showed up... sorry if i have the OS wrong.

2 things i have come across that caused this problem in PCs i worked with. See if Find Fast (MS Office) is enabled during start up. Another thing you can try is check ur NIC card. I had a bad one the other day that would cause the PC to hiccup every 5 secs. Hope that helps.

Try a different bios version. I was having problems with random freezes. I have a very similar setup to yours, 850 tbird, ka7, promise controller, maxtor 45 gig, sound blaster live card...I flashed the bois back to version RJ which is the original bios version the board shipped with, and it works fine!! This was the only cure for me. I was using RY, tried RT or which ever the latest bios for the board was. I reformatted and installed several times, but my system even crashed in Linux!

Thanks everyone! I just flashed to the orginal version of the BIOS and everything seems alright so far. I'll let you know if there are any new developments. (FYI - just overnight before flashing the BIOS, my system clock lost 3 entire minutes)

Bad news all - after running the new BIOS for a little while, it started doing the exact same thing again. Any other suggestions? DMA is enabled, so that's not the problem. I'm even more confused now.

Load the new Via Drivers...

It solved my problems when I was on a via board.. kx133..
