Hi-
i have been having this problem for the last month, trying to narrow down what is wrong wiht my computer.

Computer crashes while doing just normal activites, nothing specific to be able to point to a single thing that is making the computer crash.
The computer does not give any errors or blue screens, just keyboard freezes and eventually mouse stops moving.

Originally thought it was graphics card, so replaced it with known working graphics card, and I thought i fixed the problem, but it turns out now it just crashes less often. So therefore it is somewhat the graphics card, which I'm getting a new one of, but there is more to the problem.

I have pulled all the cards but the graphics card interchangably and computer still crashes. Also swapped both sticks of ram (not too much of a chance that I have to bad sticks of ram) so it dosent look to be the ram.

So my only thought left is that it is the motherboard or perhaps the cpu

Please give me some input on this. I really need my computer working again!

thanks

Brian

Oh one other thing i forgot to mention, my hard drive (IBM) has known bad sectors on it from an IBM test utitlity, but with an FDISK and proper format that should negate the fact that their are a few bad sectors on the hard drive because it pushes them to the end and dosent use them. But drive does format and work fine.

System:
Abit KT7A motherboard
amd 1.2 ghz tbird
512mb pc133 cas 2 ram
64mb ati radeon DDR VIVO graphics card
Soundblaster Live! 5.1
3com 3c905c network card
40gb IBM 70gxp ata100 hd
16x pioneer dvd
16x10x40 Plextor cdrw

Could be your power supply.

What is its rated power? 250W isnt really enough for the rig you specify.

Try a good make 300W model.

What OS are you using? Are you sure you downloaded all the updates?

Can you afford XP? I think you'd appreciate it with your system.

Good luck.

OS's...dont get me started...oh and I think i have a 300w, gotta get down there and look though.

Here's how this all started.

Installed XP Pro, it decided to forget that I had a burner one day randomly, so I figure, download the hardware updates for the burner...do that to no avail.

So i decide, hell with XP and goto format it. so I go and try to put on Win2k server, which I had on there about 3 months before without any problems. Server wouldnt stay on without crashing for more than 5 minutes at a time.
So i goto win2k pro, that stays on a little more..now its every 10 min it would crash.

So I goto win98se, finnaly I get an operating system that stays on about a half hour before crashing.

Then I remove my vid card and change it with a known working one, now it stays on hours, but still ends up crashing every once and a while.

So im stumped

WHAT TO DO??????????????

Are there any device conflicts?

I would suggest getting a good PSU...Enermax or Antec 300W or above. I've been using an Enermax for almost a year now without any problems.

Format your hard drive and do a clean install again. I know it gets frustrating, but try it again with XP.

And this time before installing only use the following:

Abit KT7A motherboard
amd 1.2 ghz tbird
512mb pc133 cas 2 ram
64mb ati radeon DDR VIVO graphics card
40gb IBM 70gxp ata100 hd
16x pioneer dvd

If it's stable with that setup add the other components one at a time. The NIC, then sound, then CDRW.

Also, you may want to try flashing your mobo before you attempt all this.

And did you try rebooting when XP didn't find your CDRW? I've had a system with XP Pro and a Plextor 16x10x40 without any problems. You shouldn't need a firmware update.

Good luck.
