I know this should be in the General Forum but it seems to be down for some reason so I am posting this here. After much gnashing of teeth I have decided to go for an AMD platform and not aim for any overclocking. These are the main components I have decided upon:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe MB
AMD XP2100+ CPU
1024MB Kingston DDR 333 ValueRAM (512X2)
ATI 9500 PRO 128MB video card
Seagate Barracuda V 80GB SATA 8MB cache HD
465W Enermax Power Supply

My two questions are will the XP2100+ hold back my system? And also, would I be better of running my two 512MB sticks of DDR 333 RAM at 266MHz instead of 333MHz so that my memory can run at the same speed as my CPU (FSB 266MHz)?

It sounds like 1) nForce2 is at its finest with 333MHz-bus CPUs and 2) it's best to run it in synchronous mode. But 3) AMD 1600+'s are known to easily overclock to 2100+ levels using a synchronous 166/166 setting for CPU/RAM, giving you your DDR333 speed AND your synchronous operation, all for under $60.

I have my 1600+ overclocked to the 166/166 setup and it's entirely satisfactory for running Unreal Tournament 2003 Demo and Mechwarrior 4 (I could use a bit more than just 256Mb of RAM for MW4 Mercs, but that's not the CPU's fault). In 3D modelling it's still frustratingly slow in some situations, but there's nothing on the market I could exactly call "fast" under those situations, so whatever.
