I did a search for this and couldnt find anything....
I installed WindowsXP the other day after Windows98 "forgot" that it had drivers and wouldnt let me reinstall any. It was fine until last night I noticed that songs in Winamp would skip for a split second. I figured it was the lousy default Windows drivers for my SB Live, but upgrading to the latest Creative drivers seems to have only made it worse. However, I am not certain that the sound is the culprit. What happens is, the system will stutter for a moment; the mouse will freeze, all on-screen animation will stop, and the sound playing at the moment will stutter or skip, and then after less than a second, all is fine again, until it happens again.
I have yet to see this happen while playing a game. So far it only occurs when in windows, and it seems to be worst when I am sending or recieving information through Internet Explorer. For example, it often does this when I click a link in IE, although it did it twice while I was just sitting here, not even typing. Also, it seems to occur in groups of two or three. In other words, it will happen three times in rapid succession and then it will be fine for several minutes, where it will do it three times again.
I really thought it was just the mp3s at first, but even with Winamp closed, the mouse still stutters like before. However, it seems to happen far less frequently than when Winamp is running. Also, when Winamp is loaded but not playing, the frequency is reduced. So while Winamp seems to make the problem worse, I do not think that it is the sole cause.
Nay, I take that back. I just unloaded Winamp and detected no such stuttering. Likewise, with Winamp loaded but not playing, situation was nominal. Odd; I thought I had remembered it hanging before even without Winamp running. Well, maybe that was before I installed the Creative drivers.... I dont know. Ahh, no, it freezes even without Winamp, while I am transferring data over the network. It just did so as I hit "Back" because I seem to have lost my internet connection. (Thats another thing about WinXP; ipconfig /renew doesnt seem to work with the success rate of winipcfg -> release -> renew in Win98...)
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this sort of problem. I was sure that someone else must have posted about a similar problem, but if they did, I was unable to find their post. Thanx for all your help in advance!
