Sheesh I'm dumb.... In your first reply, Punisher, you ask if I upgraded my network drivers, and I just completely ignored that, even when in my reply I declared that network activity seemed to make it worse. I guess that just because it still did it even with my NIC unplugged it must not have been that. I guess driver residue was still contaminating Windows.

this saga should make its way into a faq or sticky on the importance of updated nic drivers. i have run into this issue, and have seen others in the same pickle. congrats on a solved problem tho!

Ok. I am officially pissed off now. It still does it! It was fine for a little while after I upgraded the NIC drivers, but dammit, its doing it right now! It's not as frequent as before; now it only does it for a few minutes, and only happens every so often, instead of being continual, but it is still intolerable. Not only do all sounds skip like mad, but the mouse freezes for a second, and then when it catches back up, it has jumped twice the distance I wanted it to go. I tried disabling all hardware acceleration, thinking maybe it was the damn Creative drivers, but that had no effect. So I'm off to completely remove my SB Live.

I really hope XP runs better on my new computer, or else I'll be forced to use Win98 for the next 20 years....

I had the same type issue with my Dell laptop. At one point I even contacted Dell support. Silly me. I tried fresh installs (yes installs) to see what it was. I still am not 100% sure. It all seemed to reappear after using the windows update site. Bad patch file? Not sure, because I set a system restore point before going back, after the last fresh install, and it never reappeared. Weird.

It's odd. I dont think I've done anything different, but it seems to have stopped (again. Who knows if it will start back up?) I can remember, it was doing it again, and I got annoyed and smacked the side panel, and the comp froze. I then spent 4 hours trying to get it to POST. (Cursing myself all the while) Eventually I got it to run, and I was working on it for a couple of hours without the sound card. As I recall, it still did it even without the card. Then, the next day, I put the card back in, and I dont think its done it since then.

I think my computer is just possessed. I wish I knew for certain what was causing this, or how I seem to have rectified it.

So basically when you reinserted the soundcard the drivers were reinstalled? Sounds like the drivers reset their internal register for the PCI bus.

What you had was probably a PCI bus mastering issue.
