T2400 CPU not throttling down

Hey Guyz,

I have recently purchased HP Pavillion DV8310TX.

I just noticed few days ago that when I am not doing anything the CPU is still kicking in at full speed and not throttling down. I have checked the Intel spec for the CPU and it does support Enhanced Speed Step technology and I don't have much control over BIOS either being HP BIOS and all. But I am pretty sure it's enabled.

What drivers/program I can install which enables this functionality..?

Any help will be appreciated.

Running on AC power or battery? Mine only throttles down running on the battery stays running full speed on AC power. Check your power profile settings, the settings in there are what tells it what to throttle down to.

Yes it's running on Battery Power and the profile is set to Laptop.

You say your pretty sure speedstep is enabled in the BIOS? I would make certain it is first...speedstep will not work without enabling it in BIOS. Go from there if it doesn't work then. Also....what prog are you using to verify cpu speed? I would use the latest ver of CPU-Z.

Yes I am using CPU-Z 1.37

Well the BIOS is controlled by HP so there aren't any funky options to do so and even check but I assumed to be sure that it was enabled after seeing it working on my friend's laptop which is of same model and we both have same BIOS options.

Is there a way to check these things without looking into BIOS?

what are your cpu stats in task manager? what's the utilization like? if it's spiking up constantly, check your running processes. you may have a couple of naughty things that keep your cpu up there.

OK I just checked and monitored over an hour or so, no extra ordinary process taking over the CPU and it idles at 0 - 1% all the time.

Then the battery started to run out so I plugged in the AC Power and wolla, it throttled down. Weird right.

I mean, I thought when it's running on battery power it should care to throttle not when running on AC Power..!

Any suggestions..?

Allright I have installed latest Intel INF Updates, Latest BIOS from HP Site, I also uninstalled ACPI hardware from System Devices and have Windows reinstall it upon restart. No joy so far.

But the fact that it throttles when AC Power is connected and doesn't when running on battery confuses me..!

Any more ideas?

Sounds like your power schemes are reversed. Have you tried making a differant power scheme for when you are running off the battery? Or used the AC power scheme while running on the battery(since it seems to do what you would want it to do while running off of the battery)?

Yeah I have tried different combinations aswell as try making new schemes from the existing ones..! No joy
