I just got a new T400 and have been unfortunate enough to hear a constant high pitch noise. It is only really audible when in complete silence and I lower my head to the keyboard, but when in normal use I still feel I can sense it, and it's driving me crazy.
I have disabled CPU power management in the bios, and disabled C4 power states with RMClock. I have also tried with AC and Battery, without USB components plugged in, brightness turned down. Nothing seems to alleviate the whine.
I think I am a bit sensitive to such noises, as I can detect them in other electronics, like my router and cable modem.
It's just that this noise is extra bothersome as the laptop is so close to me, plus it's just the principle that a brand new, expensive, laptop is making such a noise.
Could it possibly be the HDD or Memory, even videocard? It seems to make the noise whether idle or under heavy use. I almost prefer when the fans are spinning as it drowns it out a bit. Maybe I never noticed this on other laptops as they aren't as "quiet" as the T400, but this noise is driving me crazy.
I have read mention about poor quality coils, or capacitors vibrating and the possibility of coating them? If this is indeed the motherboard, am I screwed? Or is it inevitable that any electronic component will emit some sort of noise?
