Wife wants a tablet with SD slot so she can store her music and books. She has been using the original Galaxy Tab 7.0 running 2.3 Gingerbread with 32gb MicroSD card as her media device. So she's due for an upgrade. The Tab won't take the 64gb MicroSD card so I want to upgrade it. I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything. I'm thinking LG G-pad 8.3 Google edition from Expansys for $209 is the best choice. http://www.expansys-usa.com/lg-g-pad-83-google-play-edition-wifi-16gb-indigo-black-263892/

Is there another tablet I might be overlooking? I know the Gpad is year old and discontinued. But it seems like there's not too many good 7-8" tablets with SD card slot.

It doesn't work with Samsung class 10 64gb card I have. But I would like to replace the tablet since the it's pretty slow now and the battery life is pretty bad. Nexus tablets are not an option due to lack of sd slot. I would give her one of my Nexus 7 tablets if that was the case. There hasn't been Nexus product with SD card slot since the original Nexus One.

Did you look at the galaxy tab pro, or the tab S? I have the 10" pro, and it works with a 64GB sd card. As she already knows touchwiz, you should check them out.

8.4 Tab Pro and Tab S are both too expensive. And the battery life on the 8.4 Tab Pro is horrible. It's similar to the original Galaxy Tab 5-6 hours battery life. Tab S would be sweet with the AMOLED display but $400 is way too much. I can't pay Apple price for non Apple product.

My 10.1 tab pro gets 11+ hours playing nothing but videos on it. The 8.4 might be less, but not 5 hours less. The 8.4 tab pro is $330 on amazon. What ipad are you going to get for that?

All the reviews I've read and several forum members who bought the device have confirmed 5-6 hours battery life on the 8.4 Tab Pro.

$330 is new iPad Mini retina price. There has been several deals on EBay from major sellers the past month for new iPad Mini Retina for $320-330. I'm willing to pay premium for Apple because they're the only option if I want iOS. Not so with Android. Plus I can count on support and updates from Apple through the product cycle. Not so with Samsung.

8.4 Tab S has gorgeous AMOLED screen but that alone is not worth almost double the price of LG 8.3 G Pad Google edition.

that's what you get

lg g pad 8.3 = older = cheaper
7:19 battery by engadget

8.4 Tab s = newer = more expensive
12:22 battery by engadget

Not really. Tab S cpu/gpu is actually under powered for its ultrahigh resolution. So it's actually going feel slower than the G-Pad running lower resolution with older cpu/gpu.

As for the Engadget battery life test, the result is highly misleading. Engadget basically tested video playback which is going to favor AMOLED screen. Movies and videos playback are AMOLED strength. If you test normal usage and web pages, results won't be so skewed and pretty similar for both tablets. G-Pad should get around 8-9 hours which is similar to Nexus 7. Tab S should fall to around 9-10 hours. Tab S should have better battery life but it won't be anything near twice as good.

i think that is a fantastic choice at that price. fast updates, great piece of hardware. at that price it's a steal IMO

I have the LG GPad 8.3. It's an okay tablet, probably a good tablet at that $209 price.
1920x1200 is still good on a screen this size and the Snapdragon 600 still feels fast enough.

My criticisms would be the LG UI kinda is ugly, but didn't seem too bloated (and CM 11 can be installed on it). Not a fan of the aluminum back, it's too smooth and seems to get dirty feeling quick, I wish it had more of a texture.

If I was buying a tablet now, I'd probably spend a tad more and get the Nvidia Shield Tablet. It's more stock Android, Nvidia says they'll quickly update it to Android L. It has a super fast Tegra K1 processor (looks like this might even stay ahead of the upcoming Snapdragon 805). And big front facing speakers.

PS. Though I probably wouldn't rule out the Tab S 8.4 either. Despite how disappointed I am with the stupid Exynos 5 gimpy GPU. Have a 2560x1600 AMOLED screen on a tablet is still awesome. Pretty much every IPS tablet have has backlight bleeding, and while I'm so used to it that I really don't notice it anymore, it would still be really awesome to have an AMOLED display with no backlight bleed and absolute blacks. Also this tablet is ridiculously light. And Anandtech's review says it gets 8 hours on their wifi test, so the battery life seems fine.

I got the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 and it can take a 128gb miniSD card. I could only afford a 64gb card at the moment. It's still enough for me. Wish I could afford the bigger one.

They gimped it with 1gb ram though vs 2 for last year's model

One step forward(better resolution/CPU), another step back

The ipad air also has 1gb of RAM. So far no one has run into any problems with the RAM but there are very few reviews. I am hoping that Anand will take a look at it and see if the RAM is actually an issue.

but iOs ecosystem is different than android... true multitasking, java vs C/C++ etc

it's not that expensive to give 2GB ram (vs 1GB).. why go backwards?

I decided to order the LG G-Pad GPE. The Dell Venue 8 is interesting but it only has 1gb ram and Intel Atom cpu. The problem with Intel cpu with Android is app compatibility. Intel has done a good job making sure major apps are compatible but there are still issues. My wife uses couple obscure foreign apps which I'm not so sure Intel cpu is compatible with. It's the opposite situation of ARM and Linux. Intel cpu is the standard and works with everything in Linux. ARM is mostly compatible but certain things aren't. It's why I prefer to buy Intel Haswell Celeron or i3 Chromebook over ARM Chromebook. But with Android, the reverse is true. ARM is preferable over Intel.

Nvidia Shield tablet is interesting. If I was buying the tablet for myself, that would probably be my choice. K1 looks pretty good but we thought the same initially about Tegra 2, 3, and 4 which all turned out to be turds. Well maybe not Tegra 4 but hardly nothing used it. But my wife doesn't need any of the gaming features of the Shield tablet so the extra $100 spent would be wasted.

processor speed on tablets isn't such a big deal if you don't game that much on tablets (I don't).

Though occasionally it can cause websurfing to stutter some. Not that big a deal. And it's still plenty quick. At least as fast as an ipad 2.

Has anyone else noticed a ghosting problem on the galaxy tab s? Maybe it's related to cinema mode on mine.

i think you made the right choice. my nexus 7 2013 is older than that and is still phenomenal but i wish i had waited for the LG Gpad Google Play Edition - i think the 8" form is the best for a tablet (i had the samsung 7.7 so close enough) plus the SD card is a no brainer as well as being a GPE so stock android with fast updates. i'd pick that over any other tablet released this year most likely as well.

I received the tablet today, and I really like it. The 8.3" screen is definitely preferable to the 7" Nexus 7 screen. I do like the white and colors better on the Nexus 7 FHD but it's really only noticeable when I place both tablets side by side. Pretty much everything else, I like the G-Pad better than the Nexus 7 FHD. There were two updates waiting upon powering the tablet. After the updates, it's running the same 4.4.4 as my Nexus 7. I installed the 64gb microSD and the G-Pad had no problem seeing it. My wife is thrilled with the tablet. She's happy so I'm happy. I would recommend the G-Pad GPE over Nexus 7. For $210, you won't find better Android tablet.
