1) So today they opened the high speed rail (bullet train, like Japan's Shinkansen) for ticket purchases. The train itself won't run till Jan 5, 2007, but today is the first day for tickets. The machine used to give change can only give change in $5 NT coins (1 USD ~ 32 NT) and not $10 NT coins and that's pretty much like getting rid of the quarter. Moreover, since bills are usually in $100 NT bills, people complained of too many coins they had to carry from the change.

Moreover, the system governing the ticket machines crashed multiple times. Assuming the ticketing system worked, it took roughly 5 - 10 minutes on AVERAGE for a person to buy a ticket. Even if you were rehearsed in the way the system works, it takes at least 3 minutes. This compares to the less than 1 minute to buy a traditional train ticket, and the 10 seconds it needs to take to buy a subway ticket (timed by the news report with footage included). So tens of thousands of people complained that they could not buy a ticket because of the massive lines and system crashes.

2) A few days ago they had the biggest lottery in Taiwan and the system crashed multiple times. As a result people could not buy tickets properly. Yay for computer crashes.

3) The clock for New Year's Eve countdown in one city was totally off due to a system crash and it was 14 minutes behind. As a result the mayor was leading the crowd in singing songs up on the stage well into midnight. The pyrotechnics went off at midnight and the crowd including the mayor was confused why fireworks were going off. They later realized that they missed midnight and the crowd demanded a new countdown. In fact there are now complaints that they want a NEW PARTY.

yeah. I hear you.

It is still better than the having just a singular party and taken people into the backroom where they disappear and are never heard from again when they disagree with something though. But I hear you. Even still, I definitely want to visit it someday. I have heard so much about it, but have never been myself.

Why didn't they just use the same wireless paycard for the HSR which they use for the MRT? DUMB is all I can say about my people

I love Taiwan. Its my favorite Asian country to visit with Japan, Hong Kong, China and Korea slightly behind. Some people follow the historical sights and places to shop but I follow the street food.

Interesting thought, but then remember MRT rides max out at like $3 USD or so, and the typical ride is like between $1 and $2 USD (damnit, why does it cost fvcking $3.25 to ride to SF from Berkeley? grrr), and I'm guessing the high speed rail tickets are a extremely expensive. I'm guessing tickets will run at least $30 USD to go from Taipei to Kaoshiung, (probably more, but then again I'm basing costs off of Japan's Shinkansen line), and so it will be hard to load up your smartcard with $30. I wouldn't carry around a card with more than $20 on me just because I might lose it.

Wiki is one helluva drug!

This past summer I was in a cab with some friends at Taitung and the driver had a bag of betel nuts. So I whipped out my camcorder and gave him an interview about that stuff and whatnot. Sure sucks to be people addicted to the stuff :brokenheart:

Curiously, Taiwan just made it onto my list of desired travel destinations

How does the place compare to Thailand?

I had it there one year ago(at Shilin)with my family plus stinky tofu and tropical fruit drinks with boba. We had no problems but I found out that we can(as a family) eat almost any street food Asia has to offer without impunity.

Go to Thailand for what many German and Japanese males go there for. But I must admit, Pattaya(I had a great time when I was single) has probably the best street food in all of Asia especially the seafood.
