OK, so i've got my brand new graphics card in hand (well i will in a month or less) and my plane ticket in the other. My question is, can i take the card
through the metal detectors, infrared scanners, and whatever else i'll see in line at security, without harming my card, or should i pack it away and put it
into storage?

sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot

I took my computer on a transatlantic flight. The case got banged up a bit, and the hard disk must have gotten a bit abused, but otherwise it was in great shape.
From now on, my HDs will travel in my carry-ons, therefore.

You actually left your HDD in the case?!?! You're brave.

I'm glad somebody asked this... I'm flying from the US to england in a month, and i'm planning on having
a motherboard, CPU, stick of DDR, graphics card and a power supply in my carry on (well, maybe the power
supply will have to go in my case)
and i was wondering about the advisability of it all...

as well as the scanners/metal detectors issue - is it a good idea to carry them all seperately, or to install them
and carry them together? I'm guessing its better to leave them in their original packing, but space and portability is going to be an issue.
ideas?

I flew from L.A. to Vermont last January. Along with the usual stuff I packed some componenets, a mouse, some software, etc. (Being the good older sibling that I am, I figured I do a few upgrades to my brother's family PC while I was back East.) Wanting to move in and out of airports as quickly as possible, I didn't check any luggage. Rather, I only has a carry-on suitcase. (All the computer stuff was in my trusty HP knapsack.)

I was thoroughly searched (I'm talking shoes off, patted down, luggage unpacked, etc) at every possible turn. The fact that I'm a whilte, middle-aged, overweight guy who wouldn't know a good cave if he saw one, seemed lost on the airport screeners. My brother said it may have been my full beard but I suspect the computer components provoked their concerns.

interesting, because i want to do the same thing when i fly to taiwan this fall...

i'm thinking i might just buy a highly integrated mobo and pack that in the suitcase - then bring the hdd with me carry on
finish it off by buying a case and monitor down there...anyone know how expensive computer stuff is in taipei compared to canada?

i flew from san diego to boston at the end of last summer, and i double boxed my fully loaded computer before sending it fedex.
i was glad i did, when i received my computer in boston there was a gaping hole in the first box, through the insulation to the second.
when i showed it to the fedex guy he just shrugged. luckily no damage =)

It's perfectly safe unless you're not a white middle-aged male who doesn't look either mid-eastern or any other ethnic group that could be "randomly" harassed.......erm searched and violated for safety reasons.
