My wife is having a party for her 26th birthday next month and is inviting around 40 people. I know about 10 of the people. The thing is I make people take their shoes off. We had a big argument about this and im wondering if it is bad manners to request people take off their shoes. No, I dont think the people are dirty but I cant help think of where everyone walks. Ive walked through many a pee soaked public bathroom floors and I think of is that when I think of shoes walking around everywhere on my carpet. Am I bad mannered to request people take off their shoes?

Screw the others... if you typically take your shoes off, that's what others should do also. Once people see a bunch of shoes in a "pile" they'll likely do the same.

I don't know how people are comfortable with sneakers and boots on inside their own homes...

People are going to think you're rather strange or maybe just anal.

If you want them to take their shoes off in your hose that is completely fine. It is not rude at all.

Every house I've visited has the shoes next to the door. In fact, I haven't seen ANYBODY walk with shoes on inside a house.

The house is yours, and they should respect the rules of taking your shoes off. At my house, most people ask if they have to take their shoes off and I say yes please and they do.

Personally I feel wierd if i don't take my shoes off even at a friends house. I dunno how they can lay down on othe ground watching tv or doing other things at the end of the day when people have been walking all over the carpet with their shoes on

definitely feels wrong... cause people lay down on the carpet for tv or whatever... putting down throw pillows and blankets or even laying their head down... that ain't so kosher if people walk all over it with sneakers.

Before we bought this house, the owners showed it to many people, and even on rainy days. I cringed at the nastiness left behind after a group went through... including us... we kept all the same carpet except 1 room, but we gave it a nice cleaning/scrub down before moving in.

there was a Curb Your Enthusiasm about this, Larry refused to take his shoes off and the hostess of the dinner party he was invited to got pissed then he knocked over a lamp, breaking glass everywhere and the hostess went nuts. "OH YOU DON'T CARE IF THERE'S BROKEN GLASS BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES IN SOMEONE'S HOUSE!!"

Buy footies/shoe covers for those unwilling to take their shoes off.

Carpet is expensive. MOST people understand. I have white carpet throughout my house and NO ONE wears shoes in my house.

your house is going to smell like a locker room! Although i'd respect the fact that you don't want people trampling through your house with their dirty shoes on, i just don't see it happening. If there were 10 people coming over, i'd definitely say go for it...but 40 is a bit different.

You are going to ask strangers to take their shoes off?

You are way too anal.

If it bothers you so much, clean the carpet and floors after the party.

Or, you could set up a shoe wash and disinfectant outside of your door. Make them walk through a shallow pan of disinfectant soap and then have them wipe their shoes on surgical towels. Of course you'll want to inspect the soles before they enter.

Just have the first few take off their shoes and the others will follow (as someone else mentioned). I agree with you completely...I'll never be comfortable in a house with my shoes on.

So I live with my woman who is Chinese and her (and her folks when they are in town and stay over) typically do not wear shoes in the house. When I first started dating her, I was a good boy and did take my shoes off all the time. However, now I have a tendency to forget. I try to remember but I simply do not all of the time.

Anyhow, needless to say she has a lot of friends who are Asian and Indian and they too have a no shoe inside type policy. I did got a party hosted by an Indian couple and there were like 15 pairs of shoes at the entry way and that was kind of crazy.

Getting to my point, I think you should go ahead and let your guests wear their shoes because simply having ~40 pairs (80 shoes!!) at your entry way is going to be a heck of a mess not to mention a pain in the butt when people decide to leave. I can understand you normally not wanting shoes in your house, and I respect that (wish I would remember to take mine off more) however again with the sheer amount of footwear the logistics may not be possible.

I agree totally with you on this. I will NEVER EVER let anyone wear shoes in my house. Period, no if, and, or but. Same reasons as you. Gosh, who knows where those shoes been.

We had a housewarming with practically all our relatives... we managed fine... front door and out in the patio - some came in / hung out there. It'll be tougher with strangers, but it's not impossible. Stand up for what you believe in. I mean it's your domain.
