So heres how this story has gone so far. I built this computer back in march of last year ordered a shiny new Asus P5E mobo for my lovely Q9450. Awsomeness in a box one would assume. So first mobo i get from newegg.... joy DoA. Not a problem it happens RMA get the new one in and everything works.... joygasm!

Fastforward more than a year and change to early Feb. Shut off the comp before I head to work that morning and come back and then try to power it on. It hangs on initializing usb controllers... no biggie I think probably just a random bug or something. Mash reboot key... same thing happens again, rinse repeat one more time. Now it wont even post.....great. Just great. Attempt to troubleshoot, yep "It's dead Jim" the mobo bites it again. RMA to Asus. (3 weeks of boredom go by) I get it back this monday, they said they had "repaired" it. Hrmm repaired a dead board... err ok. Slap everything back together surprise surprise my "reparied" board doesn't work at all.

Drag it up to my local computer store (where I used to work) and he comes to the same stunnign conclusion that I did... it's dead. Again. Crap.

So I'm abandoning this board after I RMA it yet again.

Saw that review for the Gigabyte board and just ordered one, heres hoping this thing lasts longer. Less painful to buy a new board then wait nearly a freakin month to get a "repaired" dead board back. I think im done with Asus for a while. Shame for a ~200.00 board when I got it new to have two die.

I buy Asus exclusively ... or so I say. When I built this Quad core machine last year I used a P35 Pro from Abit. And yes I get the odd, untraceable errors in Windows that I try to avoid by using brand name boards.

I'll be using Asus again for my next build, no matter what I read about other brands that I used to use.

Damn my P5E has survived since 1/2008, high temps, high volts, every setting tweaked, every slot used, dozens of "overclocking failed!!" messages, being manhandled and abused... took it all like a champ. It's been absolutely rock solid for me. Their website / support drivers, bios updates, everything has worked flawlessly (albeit a very slow website).

My next purchase will probably still be ASUS. There's a lot of gigafanboys on this site. (Not referring to OP)

Well surprise surprise the p5e was dead, the gigabyte worked, well sort of. It wont run dual channel memory or both sticks in single channel. Im hoping its just an issue with this crap tastic crucial memory i have. Have some Geil 2x2gB on order right now (wanted to up to 4gb total anyway was a good excuse).

Ok update to this. The board now runs dual channel memory, I had to underclock the ddr2-1066 crucial to ddr2-800. posted dual channel right away.

Now if only i could figure out why it restarts when i do Shutdown on windows.

I've heard a million problems when combining ballistix and P35/X38 boards, specifically the P5E but not only ASUS boards.

Remember RAM that is rated at lower volts for the same speed as other RAM will typically have much better compatibility with most motherboards...

Hence why, when I wanted to buy DDR2-1066 I went with these guys and was not disappointed. The ram boots at DDR2-1066 speeds on auto no problems.

You shouldn't have to underclock your memory in order for it to go into dual channel. Although it won't be much of a performace hit.

I have mine slighly underclocked at 788 with the voltage normal.
