I am ok for it as long as the tax money does not go to curing the cancer the idiots gets from doing this.

Let them die of their stupidity.

Unfortunately it's one of those things where it's almost impossible to prove if the cancer was caused be negligence or if it just happened. Personally, I would be very surprised if the statistics don't exist for the increased risk of cancer for habitual tanners. With that, a general idea of how many habitual tanners there are in the country, and the average cost of treating a skin cancer patient you could come to some good estimate on the cost to the government for their choices as a whole. If they were using that number to set the tax I'd be all for it.

If you incur additional risk (or use additional services) by your own choice you should pay your portion of that but you shouldn't have to pay more than your share of it.

I'm amazed that people understand that excessive sun can lead to skin cancer, but can't figure out that if they deliberately concentrate the dose so that they get multiple hours of exposure in just a few minutes that it's going to increase their risk of skin cancer.

Once again we are taxing the poor...The rich have a tanning bed in their house. : /
The poor just go outside - or else they might already be outside, working.

If you're going to a tanning salon, you're either not poor, or else you are very bad at prioritizing your spending.

Now that we are so close to a single payer national healthcare, expect more and taxes on "sins" like tanning, sugary sodas, fatty foods and eventually lack of exercise.

He who pays for health care gets a say in the care of your health.

Not really. When you're forced to have health care, then your lifestyle is dictated, that sounds like something... Plenty of allegories work here, pick one....

Update to my previous post about there being worse things in hcr than the tanning tax.

AT&T Inc. will take a $1 billion non-cash accounting charge in the first quarter because of the health care overhaul and may cut benefits it offers to current and retired workers.

The charge is the largest disclosed so far. Earlier this week, AK Steel Corp., Caterpillar Inc., Deere & Co. and Valero Energy announced similar accounting charges, saying the health care law that President Barack Obama signed Tuesday will raise their expenses. On Friday, 3M Co. said it will also take a charge of $85 million to $90 million.

Because these Health Care tax will hit across the board - expect that thecost of goods from people in the affected inductry will increase accordingly.

Then by taxing the health care equipment industry; their costs will be passed down to the hospitals/clinics/MD offices. Those people will raise their rates accordingly.
Who will pay for those increases. John Smith and the insurance companies.
Then what willthe insurace companies due - raise their rates to cover the incresase costs.

INFLATION and $$ in the government coffers to be wasted again instead of pulling the economy out of the crapper; $$ are being sucked out of it.

my company has already notified us of possible changes to the costs of our coverage.

What sucks is the penalty the small business is going to get hit with when it doesn't offer health care....there are a lot of things tied to this plan that the average american is not considering that are designed to reinforce big business and remove the smaller competitor.

And the state of New Jersey let's out a collective sigh of relief.

For some reason I just want to punch every one of these people in the fucking face. Where is this rage coming from?

I might find it in my heart to spare the chick in purple.

On a more serious note, as O & A said "Isn't this a racist tax?" How many people of colour use a tanning bed? So this must be a tax only for white people.

I heard this on the radio, too. But I wouldn't think of it as racist. I know Korean peeps who go to tanning salons, too.

Usually it's based on these guys getting quality chicks that the one in rage can't even get to talk to them.

Good, now that the cat is soon to be out of the bag with health-care, I want to minimize the amount of my money that goes towards fixing preventable diseases in others.

Bring on the fat and carb / sugar tax.

enter government mandated 'vaccines' with cryptic names.

Ask some soldiers how they feel about getting certain 'on the spot' shots.
