Ok, once more since I guess none of y'all read the entire thread.

First off... I pointed hot this deal was not all that hot (IMO), we are allowed to have opinions here at anand right? To back me up multiple people in the thread stated the same opinion as myself. I'm sorry if you (chasm) don't agree.

Secondly... I gave him an alternative. I told him that every other week there is a deal out there for a $20 or $30 Cendyne. This week there weren't any, besides a pacific digital for $9 but they are already OOS @ Staples.

Thirdly... Just to remind you people, SCSI interface devices sell for more than IDE. In my original posts I was in no way referinig to only buying SCSI burners for $30 b/c I've never seen that deal ever. Yes that yamaha is a little older, but it is SCSI, which in my freakin' opinion, increases the value. I will agree, however, that my original price was a little high, but I payed $300 for it originally and I wanted to recoupe some of the original cost. Honestly the price should have been $35 or $40 shipped.

MrMet: Read the entire thread. We weren't talking about DVD-Burners, only CD Burners so I don't know what your statement is supposed to mean. Of course I would pay more for a DVD-Burner. Also, reading the entire thread might have keyed you to the fact that my questing about the extra 52x was legitimate.

As far as the numbers go, the last number on a TDK drive is often the audio extraction speed.

It was a legitimate question with a legitimate answer... I had never seen a CD-ROM-RW w/ those markings but obviously I just don't look at TDK's... only the cheap ones

So... yes, gj to chasm, you got me har, har... but IMO it's apples and oranges. anyhow, enough Mallow bashing for one day

In the spirit of Christmas... Merry Christmas to you all And a Happy new Year w/ lots of food and family.

Thanks to everyone for making this a spirited thread. And special thanks to Chasm22 for stepping up to the plate. I saw Mallows response shortly after I posted and thought, WTF?!, I'm just passing on some info here for Chrissake! 72 bucks after rebate + shipping still seems pretty good to me for a TDK. For the record, the Comp-U-Plus ad lists the TDK as a 52x24x48x48. I wasn't sure what the extra number was for and just posted what I saw. DAE is as good a guess as anything (thanks Somekid). And while Lite-Ons may be great, I haven't had any experience with them. I have had much experience with TDK's and I know they are fast, dependable and have great factory support. While I don't mind experimenting now and then, if I have good luck with something I stick with it. That all being said, the Staples deal does look great (thanks again Chasm22!). I need to install a burner for a guy at work and this will probably do just fine. Happy holidays everyone. You too Mallow, I'm sure the view from your throne is better than mine but that's OK because "To err is human, I am uncomfortable around Gods."

Never mind the brand, just buy whatever CDRW drive Staples has on sale, after MIR & coupon applied. Hopefully, they'll have a LiteOn DVD writer drive for a good price after MIR & coupon, sometime in 2003?

Tell me if that Memorex Staples deal works out for you... OOS almost everywhere and very YMMV now. gl!

@ Ninjas last sentence... that just nullified any Christmas cheer you could possibly have been conveying.

You said burner. If you meant cd burner you should have said CD BURNER, actually i did know what you meant. But you crapped all over the guy and i just wanted to return the favor. But i do forsee us all paying more than $30.00 dollars for a burner in the future again. We dont know what type of new technology will bring. When I paid $220.00 for my 4x burner 3 years ago, I never dreamed they would hit 52x and have the burnproof technology(yeah i own a TDK and love it, 16x infact I cant see spending 30 bucks to increase my burn time by a mere 1.5 -2 minutes. I just dont burn enough CD's to make in cost worthy.)

very true... I never thought cd-burners would get available to anyone for $10 or $20 AR... it is truely amazing... however, I don't see the price going up a lot b/c I see dvd-burners as the next semi-big thing as far as the market component goes and those prices will "never?" be this low? lol, well thats what I thought about CD-Burners so who knows how low they will eventually go in price, albeit a couple years down the road.

Who knew Coraanu? That's why I dig the AnandTech Forums so much. Informative and fun, as long as nobody loses an eye! My girlfriend thinks I'm a geek but......oh nevermind.
P.S. I hit Staples today looking for that 29 dollar burner but they were OOS. bummer
