TDP after overclock?

I am thinking of getting an FX-4300 / FX-6300 for my budget gaming and video-editing build, along with either an ASRock 970 Extreme3 or ASUS M5A97.

However, I am worried about the power consumption of the CPUs once overclocked. I initially thought that the idle TDP of the CPUs stays the same even after overclock, and only the load TDP increases... however I've been told that idle TDP will also increase, as the CPU will constantly be running at full power, even if I leave it to idle... this is a concern, especially since I won't be gaming and video-editing 24/7, I don't want my system wasting power at max load when I'm just browsing and listening to music.

So my question is... how high should I expect my idle TDP to be if I overclock the FX-4300 / FX-6300?

Idle power consumption wont change with an overclock normally. Only if you disable any power savings features, so dont disable those. Its also stupid to disable anyway.

If I don't have to, and I can overclock while maintain the same idle TDP, that would be great! I just need to confirm. 1 person says something, another person says something else... I need a straight answer.

Not concerned about power consumption while gaming or video-editing. Yes it will be high, but that's like only a couple of hours a day, so no biggie.

Before anyone starts saying get an i5-3570K and Z77, please understand this. Where I am, to get the i5-3570K + decent Z77 mobo + CPU cooler will cost well over $500. With the AMD setup, it will cost about $250.

You do NOT need to disable any of the power-saving features of either AMD or Intel processors while overclocking.

Keep them all on, enjoy your OC.

Before anyone starts saying get an i5-3570K and Z77, please understand this. Where I am, to get the i5-3570K + decent Z77 mobo + CPU cooler will cost well over $500. With the AMD setup, it will cost about $250.

Why would a i5 3570K+Z77 cost 500$? Even using the expensive Newegg only, it can be had for as low as 305$. using Microcenter for the CPU and its 255$ for CPU+mobo.

Bud, I'm living in Saudi Arabia. Higher prices here. Its $255 for the i5-3570K alone here.

And you need a 250$ board with it?

Remember a more expensive board desnt mean better. Its usually just some extra features added. That applies to both AMD and Intel.

Also remember an overclocked 3570K would simply run in circles around the overclocked FX4300/6300. Even as stock its faster.

I can understand that, you've got limited options and given a choice between those two I'd go with the AMD setup as well.

Please tell me you are putting an SSD in there though. If you don't have an SSD then you need to back up and rethink your "upgrade" path

I just need something that is faster than my alternative option, which is for nearly the same price: i3-3220 and cheapest B75 motherboard.

I now the 3570K will run circles round the FX-4300 / FX-6300, but please bear in mind that it is a lot more expensive.

Why would I need an SSD? I don't care about faster load times... what else am I missing out on? Do I really need one? The least expensive one around here is a 60GB Corsair for $100

I currently have an i3-2100 with a mATX B75 board and 1x4GB low profile Kingston. However, one of my friends offered to buy them off me for the full price I paid, so no loss in value.

The rest of my system comprises of the following:

Sapphire HD 6850
WD Caviar Blue 500Gb 7200rpm
LiteOn DVD/RW
Corsair CX500
Thermaltake V3 Black Edition

Could you please recommend a nice bundle to purchase for the CPU, mobo and RAM? Without going too extreme into the performance ofcourse. I doubt I will see a performance improvement in games by upping the CPU, as the GPU is a 6850 not something beastly.

I will be getting back $205 from selling my current i3-2100, mATX B75 and RAM. Don't mind spending higher than $205 if its worth it.

Don't know about a bundle, but they're always being offered.

I'd budget about $200 for the mobo. For me, I'd first look at the ASUS P8Z77 series, but there are other boards -- some mATX or even the Maximus V mATX models. Others like ASRock, but I am standing pat on my sequence of the choices. You may be able to get 2x4GB for $30 and 2x8GB for maybe $90 (on sale).

The processor "is" what Intel says what it is. Probably in the $200+ range. Have to look again.

I have heard reports that CnQ does not work properly, above an 18.5x multi. Whether there is truth to that, I do not know.

That's how it is on my X4 and X6. I just use PhenomMsrTweaker to create a software version of CnQ so I don't loose out of power savings at idle.
