I know a kid with one of those bikes. I did ask him about it, but he wasn't a douche. I suspect its because I am friends with his dad. He said it was the "in" thing now. I told him it looked dangerous as hell. He agreed, but said you are hardcore if you ride one.
He let me take it for a spin down the street. I didn't go very fast, because after all, this was a suicide machine. It had no hand brakes, a fixed gear and the pedals were locked in rotation with the wheel, so no free wheel spinning at all. If you were moving forward, the pedals were spinning one way. If you rolled backward, they spun the other way. If you went too fast, you either muscled down on the pedals to slow down, or you take your feet off and abandon ship. I had a hard time stopping after going like 10mph. These people are idiots.

They used to be called track bikes. I got to ride one once in the 1980s when I was a teen and hung around my local bike shop a lot. Very light weight but yeah, no brakes. You have to rely on your legs to resist the turning of the pedals to slow the bike.

Now it is fashionable to ride them on the street for some reason and put a skinny flat bar on it and white wall tires.

I loved the movie quicksilver!

I used to do criteriums and race and there was a velodrome not too far from my house growing up and the weekend races were awesome!!!

One time Mark Gorski showed up after winning his golds and spanked everyone that weekened. Was awesome to lose to a guy so good.

now if anyone have footage of a hipster falling trying to ride a track bike I would be real appreciative.

That sounds terrifying. I am guessing these bikes were originally made for racing (thus the name "track bikes")? I can maybe see that, but riding one on the street sounds like a really bad idea.

Grow a beard with mustache, wear a mismatched outfit, drink a can of PBR, and complain about things that are popular.

I was riding a road bike at the time and the shop I used to hang out at had high end bikes (Bianchi, Colnago, etc) and catered to some local race teams so they always had a few high end used bikes in stock. I had never seen a track bike before (yes, they are for racing indoors in a velodrome). I've never competed but it was fun to try out the bike. Very stiff, very light, very responsive but yeah, not a great bike for city riding IMO.

A lot of these guys put a front brake on them and some use a flip-flop hub that allows you to freewheel.

Not sure if any of the above youtube links are for the show, but Portlandia seems to be a good resource for learning about hipsters in their native habitat.

They are. The entire show is like a NatGeo nature show depicting free range hipsters in their natural environment.

It was just like that, including those stupid handle bars. This is definitely a "thing" amongst these hipster types. Also, above posted videos are great. I am very much enjoying learning about this. Its really funny and entertaining. I want more. Give me more hipster.

Also, the guy I know, he had the skinny jeans, old looking shirt AND the beany. I kid you not. He looked just like that guy in the evolution of hipster post above. Beard and all (Just not that long of a beard). I thought he was having a nervous break down or was REALLY depressed to the point of just going homeless style, but I am thinking this was a hipster thing for him.

I think the show is hilarious. I wonder what someone from outside the US would think about that show. The humor is so subtle and understated I think it's possible to not even realize it's comedy if you don't already know. So totally and completely deadpan.

Love that show. Watched some episodes on the plane yesterday. Always makes me laugh and I love the opening theme song.

While I applaud them for their willingness to experiment I've found they do a lot of really terrible beer and coffee. Drinks and food I'm with you. Yum.
